The first bracket is a genuinely good entry point and it is split between shoes and light outerwear. Madewell's Signature Suede Shoulder Bag at $148 is the cheapest bag and the plainest. On shoes, Sam Edelman's Ruthie Suede Bow Woven Ballet Flats at $150, the Birkenstock Boston Printed Suede Clogs at $155 and the Dolce Vita Mella Suede Studded Mary Jane Flats at $160 are three very different flats at nearly the same price, and the Boston clog is the one that will be worn most. Free People's We The Free Blair Faux Suede Sierra Jacket at $168, the Avec Les Filles Faux Fur Trim Coat at $188 and BlankNYC's Suede Cropped Jacket at $198 close the bracket, and the BlankNYC is real suede at under $200.

The middle is where the bags take over, and it is the strongest part of the edit for accessories. Tory Burch supplies two, the Romy Suede Slim Top Handle at $295 and the Romy Suede Small Bauletto at $395, which are the same material in a soft and a structured shape. Staud's Levi Suede Top Handle Bag at $350 sits between them and is the most sculptural. Madewell's Suede Leather Handwoven Tote at $218 opens the bracket and is the most casual bag here. Veronica Beard's Arch Whipstitch Suede Belt at $225 is the only belt in the edit. On shoes, Favorite Daughter's Yvonne Shearling Loafers at $275 are the only shearling footwear and Farm Rio's Kitten Belted Suede Boots at $398 are the boot. Emme's Faux Fur Reversible Parka at $395 is the outerwear.

The top bracket is where the materials are real and the construction shows. Simkhai's Nixi Shearling Bucket Bag at $495 is the only shearling bag in the edit. Vince's Cameron Shearling and Suede Boots at $498 combine both materials and are the warmest thing here. Veronica Beard's Suede Clutch at $575 and the Cult Gaia Nova Suede Tote at $598 are the two mid-size bags. Cinq a Sept's Anita Fold Over Suede Booties at $625 are the most unusual shape. Reiss' Cara Suede Jacket at $770 and Toteme's Suede Shoulder Bag at $770 sit at the same price and are the two cleanest pieces at this level. Stella McCartney's Faux Fur Trim Ankle Boots at $1,125 are the most expensive item and the only faux material in the bracket.

Suede divides sharply by whether it is real, and this edit contains both without always making it obvious. Faux suede at $79 is a fine way to try the look for one autumn, but it will not age and it does not handle rain any better than the real thing. Real suede starts around the BlankNYC cropped jacket at $198, which is the best value item in the whole edit. The bags in the middle bracket are where we would spend, because suede on a bag takes far less abuse than suede on a shoe and the Tory Burch Romy at $295 will still look good in three years. Shearling is the harder buy, and the Vince Cameron boot at $498 is the only piece that uses it structurally. If you take one thing away, real suede on a bag beats faux suede on a coat.
