Suede Bags: Totes, Shoulder Bags and Top Handles for Fall

Suede bags have become the default autumn accessory, from slouchy shoulder bags to totes and top handles. I go through the bags I would carry first, then the shoes that follow.

Bags

The shoulder bag is where suede made its case first. Unlined, soft and slouchy against the body, it does something structured leather physically cannot, and the shape has followed the material rather than the other way round. Nothing here holds a rigid form and that is deliberate.

Still more Bags

The third run goes evening. Suede takes light differently to leather, which is why it reads richer in a dim room and flatter in daylight, and the going-out bag has quietly become the strongest use case. This is the material at its most flattering.

Even more Bags

More still, mixing suede with leather trim. Combining the two is the practical compromise, since the leather takes the wear at the corners and the suede does the looking. Most of the bags people actually keep are built this way.

And of course some shoes...

Our honest take

Suede is a genuinely worse material than leather by every practical measure: it marks, it stains, it hates rain, and it cannot be wiped clean. It has taken over anyway, because it looks softer and richer in exactly the lighting where people look at bags. Buy it in a small shape you can replace rather than in the one bag you need to survive a winter. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together YSL Bag Dupe.
