Sweaters, Cardigans, and Knitwear

Sweaters, Cardigans, and Knitwear

More than a hundred fall sweaters, from fine cashmere crewnecks to belted cardigans, a few loud argyles and a top shelf from Prada and The Row. I sorted them by how much work they do in a week, starting with the ones I would wear four days out of five.

The sweaters that survive the September purge

Every September I go through the same ritual: I pull every sweater out of storage, hold each one up to the window and count the holes. What survives is almost always a plain crewneck or a cardigan in a good yarn, which tells me exactly what I will reach for.

This edit leans on three places I trust for that. GWYN is goop's own label, the new name Gwyneth Paltrow gave G. Label when she relaunched it at New York Fashion Week in September 2025, with Sofía Menassé, who came from The Row and Maison Margiela, as design director and most of the line made in Italy. Moda Operandi fills in the designer end, from Éterne and Lisa Yang cashmere to argyles from CLOSED and Leset, and Revolve covers the everyday knits I would happily own in two colors.

The first grid is the everyday layer: crewnecks, V-necks and turtlenecks. GWYN's Sloane Sweater in navy and Signature Turtleneck in ivory sit next to Éterne's Francis Cashmere Sweater and Nili Lotan's red Venus Cashmere Sweater. Further down, Soft Goat's Girlfriend Turtleneck Pullover, Rag & Bone's Ingrid turtleneck, SKIMS' Cashmere Oversized Boyfriend Sweater and ANINE BING's Lee Crew Sweater are the plain ones I would wear on repeat, while ROTATE's Cable Crewneck Sweater and Vince's Boiled Funnel Neck Pullover add texture without a pattern. Newer in this grid are Tibi's Tissue Cashmere Crew Neck Pullover, Vince's Slim Long Sleeve Cashmere Turtleneck and Brushed Alpaca Crew Neck Pullover, and Jenni Kayne's Cropped Cashmere Jet V Neck. Hold any knit up to a light before you keep it. If you can see through it easily, it will pill and stretch by February. The second grid is cardigans, the third is the small group of loud knits, argyle, cable and rugby stripes, that I would buy one of, not three, and the last is the top shelf, from Prada and The Row to Khaite.

Numbered collage of six sweaters from this edit: Nili Lotan Venus Cashmere Sweater, GWYN Ryan Cardigan, Leset James Argyle Sweater, Lisa Yang Azalea Cardigan, GWYN Dolomites Sweater and Nili Lotan Rashida Rugby Sweater.

Crewnecks, V-necks and turtlenecks

Cardigans that act like jackets

The most famous cardigan ever worn is probably the green mohair one Kurt Cobain wore on MTV Unplugged in 1993. It was scruffy, oversized and missing a button, and it still explains why a cardigan works: it looks like you did not try.

The ones below are the shapes I actually reach for. GWYN's Ryan Cardigan and Marilyn Cardigan both tie at the waist, which turns them into a light jacket over a slip dress or a T-shirt. The Noémie Cardigan has a shawl collar and reads warmer than it looks, and the Nell Cardigan is a navy deep V that works with denim and with grey trousers. From Moda Operandi, The Garment's Como Belted Wool-Cashmere Cardigan is the charcoal version of the same idea, Toteme's Shawl-Lapel Cashmere-Blend Cardigan is the one I would wear as outerwear in October, and Lisa Yang's Azalea Brushed Cashmere Cardigan is the soft blue one. GWYN's Whistler Cardigan zips up like a track jacket, The Great's Commander Riding Cardigan and LAMARQUE's Balera Cardigan both belt at the waist, and Rag & Bone's Archie cardigan is the jewel-neck one in brown. Lisa Yang's Wilona Cashmere Cardigan buttons up in graphite and her Sadie Zip Cardigan works like a jacket, Jenni Kayne's Bordeaux Stripe Timber Cardigan is the relaxed striped one, and A.L.C.'s Suzanne Cardigan has a chevron knit.

My test: button it and lift your arms. If the placket gapes between buttons, size up or skip it. What I would skip is a cropped cardigan if you mostly wear high-waisted trousers, because the gap at the waist is exactly where the cold gets in.

One loud sweater, not three

Argyle comes from the tartan of Clan Campbell of Argyll in the west of Scotland, and it became a sweater pattern when Pringle of Scotland knitted it in the 1920s and golfers, then the Duke of Windsor, made it the uniform of the course. A century later it still does the same job: one patterned sweater makes plain trousers look deliberate.

This grid is small on purpose. CLOSED's Argyle Rolli Wool Sweater and Leset's James Oversized Argyle Wool Sweater are the two diamond patterns, and Lisa Yang's Elaria Cardigan is the argyle you can button. For stripes, Nili Lotan's Rashida rugby has the white collar, the Raelynn Sweater, also Nili Lotan, is the Breton stripe in a turtleneck, and Lisa Yang's Zerlina Striped Cashmere Sweater is the soft one. GWYN's Peyton Sweater is the red cable knit and the Dolomites Sweater is the cream fisherman version.

Wear these with everything else plain: dark jeans, a straight trouser, a loafer. What I would skip is a patterned sweater under a patterned coat. One of them has to be quiet.

The top shelf

The Row started in 2006 with Ashley Olsen trying to make the perfect T-shirt, and twenty years later it is still the label that makes a plain knit look like the best-made thing in the room. Its Parth Cashmere Sweater is the reason this grid exists: when a sweater has no logo and no pattern, the yarn and the finishing are the whole story.

Everything at the top end of the edit sits here together, so you can compare like with like. Prada has three, from the Argyle Cashmere Sweater to the Color-Blocked Wool-Cashmere Sweater. TWP, the New York label led by Trish Wescoat Pound, has the Shrug Cashmere Crewneck Sweater in dark grey and the Traveling Cable-Knit Cashmere Turtleneck. Gabriela Hearst grew up on her family's ranch in Uruguay, and her Sael sweater with Paul Smith is the printed one, Khaite's Elias is embroidered cashmere-mohair, and Bottega Veneta keeps its V-neck almost bare. Nili Lotan's Feron Argyle Sweater is the one pattern here I would wear to the office.

My test at this level: turn it inside out. The seams should be neat and flat, and the inside should look almost as finished as the outside. What I would skip, if this is your one big knit of the year, is the most trend-led shape. The crewneck will still get worn in ten years.

How I would build the fall stack

If I were starting from nothing, I would buy three: one fine crewneck in a dark color, one cardigan that ties or belts, and one patterned sweater. That covers the office, the weekend and the dinner where you want to look like you tried.

Read the fiber line on the product page before making a choice. A tighter knit holds its shape longer than a loose one, and pure wool or cashmere recovers after a wash better than most acrylic blends. Wash by hand, dry flat and fold, never hang. A sweater left on a hanger grows shoulders by Christmas. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Designer Cardigans and Bandana Sweater.
