Tallow and Honey Balm Reviews, and the Rich Balms Worth Trying

Tallow and honey balm reviews made rich, old-fashioned balms popular again, and the honest version of the trend is that honey, ceramides and plant butters can do the same comforting job. These are the honey creams and lip balms I would try, the rich barrier balms for very dry skin, and the multi-use balms for lips, cheeks and dry spots.

Few beauty trends have been as surprising as tallow. Through 2024 and 2025, TikTok filled up with people whipping rendered beef fat, often with honey, into homemade face balms and posting their results. The appeal made a kind of sense. The fatty acids in tallow resemble some of the fats in our own skin's oil, and a thick balm feels wonderful on dry, cracked skin in winter.

The honest part of any tallow and honey balm reviews roundup is the caveats. The research is limited, heavy animal fats can clog pores on acne-prone skin, and homemade balms vary a lot. The retailers in this edit do not currently carry a tallow balm, so instead I went looking for what people actually love about the trend: rich texture, a sealed-in barrier and the soothing comfort of honey.

Honey is a humectant, which means it pulls water into the skin, and people have put it on their skin for thousands of years. Farmacy's Honey Halo is an intense ceramide moisturizer for dry, distressed skin, and it is the closest in spirit to a honey balm. Guerlain's Abeille Royale day cream was inspired by the old practice of honey bandages and is made to target firmness, lines, smoothness and radiance.

For lips, Gisou's Honey Glaze lip mask is buttery, with Mirsalehi honey and collagen for a glazed shine. Farmacy's Honey Butter lip balm combines honey, beeswax and cupuaçu butter, and Guerlain's Kiss Kiss Bee Glow is a honey-infused tinted balm that revives your natural lip color with a soft glow.

Barrier balms for skin that feels tight

What tallow fans really want is a barrier cream that seals moisture in and makes tight, flaky skin feel calm again. These do that without the heavy animal fat, most of them with ceramides, the fats your barrier is naturally built from.

First Aid Beauty's Ultra Repair Cream is the one I would try first, a rich whipped moisturizer for dry, distressed skin and eczema that strengthens the barrier right after you apply it. AESTURA's Atobarrier365 is a Korean ceramide cream that is dermatologist tested and non-comedogenic, with up to 120 hours of hydration. Belif's The True Cream Moisturizing Bomb is cushiony and whipped, with peptides and up to 48 hours of moisture.

Tatcha's Indigo Overnight Repair is fragrance free and endorsed by the National Eczema Association, and Ilia's Barrier Build cream is accepted by the same association and clinically shown to soothe redness. Erborian's Centella Barrier Cream is rich and comforting, with the cica plant Korean skincare has long relied on. Rhode's Barrier Butter seals in moisture for up to 24 hours and feels closest to a true balm. And Dieux's Skin Mercy is an intense recovery cream made for sensitive skin.

Apply any of these to damp skin at night as the last step. If your skin is very dry, a thin layer again in the morning under sunscreen makes a real difference by midweek. The goal is skin that feels comfortable all day, not skin that looks shiny for an hour.

One balm for everything

The best part of the tallow trend was the idea of one little tin that fixes everything. These multi-use balms are the modern version, small enough for a pocket and useful on lips, cheeks, cuticles and dry patches.

Glossier's Balm Dotcom is the one many people already own, a lip balm and skin salve with antioxidants that works on dry knuckles and brows too. Dior's Le Baume is a lip, body and hand cream in one elegant tin. Gucci's Multipurpose Balm is fragrance free and made from natural-origin ingredients, lovely on flyaways and cuticles.

Kate McLeod's Everywhere Stick is made with four plant butters and is great for lips, heels and everything in between. Hanni's Fatty Stick is a waterless balm full of fatty acids that support the barrier, probably the closest in philosophy to tallow without the animal fat.

Two add color. Makeup by Mario's Jelly Jar is a bouncy balm for lips and cheeks with a wash of juicy color, and Sephora Collection's Color Twister is an oil-in-stick for cheeks and lips that shifts shade on contact.

Keep one in your coat, one by the bed and one at your desk, and you will always have one when your lips start to crack. A balm used five times a day does more than a fancy cream used once. The Glossier and Kate McLeod sticks are also the ones I hand to friends who swear nothing works on their winter hands.

Rich, not heavy

Rich balms work best in small amounts, warmed between your fingers and pressed into skin rather than rubbed. Put them on last, over any serum, so they seal everything in. If you are prone to breakouts, keep the heaviest balms to your dry patches and lips instead of your whole face.

Patch test anything new for a few days, especially with honey or beeswax if you have allergies. In summer, switch to a lighter cream and save the balm for your lips, heels and hands. And judge a balm the next morning, not the minute it goes on. Soft, calm skin at breakfast is the whole point.
