Tanya Taylor studied fashion design at Parsons and also holds a finance degree from McGill, an unusual pair of backgrounds for a designer. She founded it in 2012 and chose the Museum of Modern Art, her favorite place in the city, as the venue to launch. The brand is known for color, texture and original prints, and each print begins as a hand-painting made by the team in the New York studio. The dresses here show the range. The Sloane embroidered midi, the Thea floral A-line midi and the Violeta printed silk-blend maxi lead with color. The Barton mirror embellished linen-blend minidress and the Barton embellished-trim mini are for evenings, and the Adrien satin midi is the calmer pick. The shirtdresses, including Corinna, Hannah and Anna, are the daytime answers, and the Reign suede mini and the Vera turtleneck midi take the same ideas into fall. The tops are where the color can be quieter. The Adrien top, the Adrien draped satin top and the Adrien mock neck top are one shape in three moods. The Marina collared cotton top and the Marina cashmere crewneck, the Lexia cashmere sweater and the Audrey V-neck cashmere sweater are the pieces to wear on repeat. The Jessa botanical metallic jacquard top and the Brigid floral satin tie-shoulder top are the dressed up ones, and the Delia stripe cardigan and the Sybil argyle-inspired crewneck bring a bit of pattern. The Largaux sequin pocket cotton Oxford shirt is the playful surprise. The skirts are the loudest section. The Kiah sequin pencil midi-skirt and the Kiah sequined skirt are for nights out, and the Ari mirror-embellished linen-blend mini skirt is the daytime sparkle. The Fran suede mini skirt and the Fran red leather mini skirt are made for fall, and the Beth midi skirt, the Beth floral A-line midi skirt and the Tavia floral-print midi skirt carry the color. The Hudley denim midi skirt in midnight rinse and the Hudson high-waist belted denim midi skirt are the easiest to wear every day, and the Adler plaid wide-leg pants are the exception. Four pieces finish the edit. The Natasha sequin jacket and the Heather satin blazer are for dressing up, while the Nadia calf-hair coat is the cold weather statement. Throw the sequin jacket over a plain dress and the whole outfit is done. The calf-hair coat is the piece to buy when the weather turns, and it works best over simple black or navy so the texture stays the focus. If I had to choose one outfit, it would be the Hudley denim midi skirt, an Adrien top and the Natasha sequin jacket. In 2023 Tanya Taylor opened her first flagship at 980 Madison Avenue, which says a lot about how far the hand-painted idea has come. The label keeps coming back to the same promise: color you can wear.
