The Best Skincare Routine Is Shorter Than You Think

The Best Skincare Routine Is Shorter Than You Think

The best skincare routine is usually three steps done well: a gentle cleanser, one serum for your main concern, and a moisturizer with daily sunscreen. These are the cleansers, serums and moisturizers I would build it from, sorted by skin type.

For a while, skincare routines kept getting longer. Ten steps, then twelve, shelves of essences, toners and ampoules. Then, around 2021, Pinterest flagged a search trend it called skinimalism, and a lot of us quietly started throwing things out. Dermatologists had been saying it for years anyway. The American Academy of Dermatology's basics are simple: a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer and a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher every day.

So when people ask me for the best skincare, I start there. Three steps, done every day, with one serum added for the thing that bothers you most. That is it. Everything else is optional, and a lot of it, from toners to eye creams to face mists, is a matter of taste rather than necessity. If you enjoy those extra steps, keep them, but do not feel you are failing your skin without them.

Start with a cleanser that suits your skin. For dry or sensitive skin, First Aid Beauty's Ultra Gentle cleanser is fragrance free and cream to foam, and Tatcha's Rice Wash leaves skin soft and never tight. Fresh's Soy cleanser is gentle enough for anyone and takes off everyday makeup. Youth To The People's Superfood gel cleanser removes makeup, SPF and excess oil without drying.

For oily or congested skin, Caudalie's Vinopure gel cleanser purifies and targets pores, and The INKEY List's Salicylic Acid cleanser helps with blackheads and breakouts. Dieux's Baptism cleanser is hydrating but unclogs pores, a good middle ground. Clarins' One-Step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser exfoliates and removes makeup in one step.

Wash properly once at night. In the morning, a splash of lukewarm water is often enough if your skin is dry, and a gentle cleanse if it is oily.

A gentle cleanser, one good serum, a moisturizer and daily sunscreen.

One serum, chosen for one reason

Serums are where routines get out of hand, so pick one, based on the one thing you would change about your skin. More than two serums at once usually means more irritation, not better results.

For oily skin and big pores, The Ordinary's Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% brightens, improves texture and helps with excess oil. For dark spots, Caudalie's Vinoperfect serum fades the look of spots from sun, breakouts or pregnancy. For dryness, The INKEY List's Hyaluronic Acid serum and Drunk Elephant's B-Hydra both flood skin with water, and B-Hydra also helps with dullness.

For sensitive or stressed skin, Lancôme's Génifique Ultimate is hydrating and soothing, made to support the moisture barrier. For glow, Glow Recipe's Watermelon Glow Dew Drops work morning or night, under makeup or alone.

For firmness and lines, Clarins' Double Serum combines 22 plant extracts in a two-phase formula that visibly firms and boosts radiance. Sulwhasoo's First Care Activating Serum is a Korean classic you use first, right after cleansing, to strengthen the barrier and improve radiance.

Put your serum on slightly damp skin, let it sink in for a minute, then move on. If you are not sure which concern matters most, start with niacinamide or hyaluronic acid. They suit nearly everyone and play well with everything else, and you can always add a second, targeted serum once you know how your skin responds.

Moisturizer and sunscreen, every day

Moisturizer keeps your barrier comfortable, and sunscreen does more than anything else for how your skin looks years from now. If your routine were only these two, you would still be ahead.

For dry skin, Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream uses squalane and pro-ceramides for up to 72 hours of hydration. Fresh's Rose and Hyaluronic Acid moisturizer is dewy and plumping, and Summer Fridays' Jet Lag doubles as a mask when your skin feels tight. For oily or combination skin, Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel is oil free and balancing, Tatcha's Water Cream is light and pore refining, and Youth To The People's Air-Whip is a lightweight gel that plumps without shine.

Then sunscreen, every morning, even in winter and on cloudy days. Supergoop's Unseen Sunscreen is invisible, weightless and scentless, and it doubles as a primer under makeup. Shiseido's Urban Environment Fresh-Moisture sunscreen is SPF 40 and hydrating, a nice pick if you want your moisturizer and SPF to feel like one step.

Apply sunscreen last, after moisturizer, and use enough, about a quarter teaspoon for your face. Reapply if you are outside for long stretches. A sunscreen you like wearing is the one you will actually use every day, so try a few until one feels right on your skin. Texture matters more than people admit, and a sunscreen that pills under makeup or stings your eyes will end up in a drawer.

Give it six weeks

The hardest part of a simple routine is sticking with it long enough to see what it does. Skin renews itself roughly every month or so, so give any new routine about six weeks before you judge it, and introduce one new product at a time so you know what is working.

Morning is cleanse or rinse, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen. Night is cleanse, serum, moisturizer. That is the whole thing. The best routine is not the longest one on your shelf. It is the one you can do half asleep, every single day, without thinking about it. When something new catches your eye, ask which step it replaces before you buy it.
