The Boots Edit

The Boots Edit

An edit of boots organized by material and then by style, from RAYE's varied shapes to leather, suede, shearling and faux fur, then knee-high, ankle, western, slouch, over-the-knee and lug-sole pairs. I start with the sole and shaft, then choose the pair that fits the way I dress.

The Shoes That Get Worn

The boots edit is a lesson in choosing the sole before the fantasy. I want to know whether I need a knee boot, an ankle boot, a soft suede shape or something insulated-looking, then I look at the shaft, the heel and the way the boot will meet my clothes. Leather is the most adaptable, suede is the most beautiful when cared for properly, shearling brings volume, and a simple pair can still be useful if it has a convincing line. The range here runs from the Jeffrey Campbell Knit Boot to the Christian Louboutin Cassia Nodo 100 leather knee boots, so I focus on the shape rather than a label. I am wary of boots that are fashionable only from the front. Check the opening, the ankle and the sole, because those are the details that decide whether a pair sits neatly under trousers or overwhelms them. Below, the boots I would consider, arranged by material and then by style so the practical choices remain visible beside the dramatic ones.

Label Love: RAYE

RAYE has a useful instinct for making boots feel current without turning them into a dare. The Cora Bootie is the simple starting shape, while the Anora Boot is the taller option. The Lauren Boot and the Athena Boot are the pairs I would compare for everyday wear, because both have clean lines without feeling precious. The Shani Boot is more deliberate, and the Emilia Boot completes the range with a taller presence. The label's strength is variety. Check the shaft against your trousers and do not assume a boot is practical simply because the heel looks low.

Leather

Leather is the boots category I would start with because it handles the most outfits. The Proenza Schouler Trap leather ankle boots have a defined shape, while the Valentino Garavani Zimmy 40 and the Jimmy Choo Alizze 85 knee boots are the dressier choices. The Khaite Bella leather ankle boots are the polished choice, and the Isabel Marant Denvee leather boots offer a different balance of ease and presence. The Nili Lotan Towns leather boots are the quieter option, and the Phoebe Philo ankle boot is the quietest pair here, the one I would wear with everything.

For a sharper line, the STAUD Brooklyn Boots are a tall black riding shape, the Victoria Beckham Harlow mid boots stop at the calf, the Acne Studios Brillante boots bring a sleeker toe, and the rag & bone Kai ankle boots are the clean everyday pair. The Ferragamo Ofely knee boots, the Toteme mid heel boot, the Neous Ran boots and the Emme Parsons Minori add height, a stacked heel and a square toe.

Leather still needs the right shaft and toe for your wardrobe. Try them with the trousers and skirts you actually wear, because a beautiful boot that creates an awkward break will stay in its box.

Suede

Suede is the softer boot material, but it asks for more honesty about care. The Aeyde Tate suede ankle boots are the clean starting point, while the Aeyde Agata 40 and the Le Monde Beryl Carole 35 suede ankle boots add a little more character. The Gianvito Rossi 85 suede knee boots are the long dark option, and the Khaite Clive suede knee boots are the silhouette to consider when you know you will wear the shaft. The Gucci Horsebit-detailed suede Chelsea boots are the recognisable one, and the Zemeta Bow Suede Boot is the softest, most relaxed pair.

Newer here are the rag & bone Kai suede ankle boots, the Reformation Dominique high knee boots in dark suede, the Black Suede Studio Blaze 45 booties in tobacco and the Laidback London Nyali Micro booties, which are the cosy end of the range with a soft lining.

Suede marks easily, so check the forecast before choosing it for a daily commute. Its reward is softness, not invincibility.

Shearling And Faux Fur

Shearling and faux fur are the boots for visual warmth and a more substantial foot. The UGG Classic Ultra Mini Shearling Bootie is the familiar low shape, while the Coach Leah Platform Shearling Zip Bootie gives the idea a little lift. The Dico Copenhagen Liv Shearling High Boot is the taller option, and the Moon Boot Icon Faux Fur Boot makes a much louder statement. The Moon Boot Icon Low Shearling Boot is a considered choice in the group. These materials add bulk quickly, so keep the leg line simple. Check the opening and the sole before assuming a soft boot will be easy to tuck under a trouser.

Knee-high boots

A knee-high boot is the one I wear most from October on, because it goes under a midi skirt and over a straight jean without any fuss. The Steve Madden Riggs and the Tony Bianco Hayes are the low, riding-style pairs in brown, and the Dolce Vita Brion is the soft suede one on a small heel. For more height, the Sam Edelman Sylvia, the Cult Gaia City Knee Boot and the Rag & Bone Mercer keep to black, while the Steve Madden Lingo comes in a deep burgundy on a slim stiletto. The Vince Lilith is the grey one, the LPA Greta is the snake print, and the BY FAR Zoe, the Dolce Vita Aldy and the Paris Texas Jane 60 sit in the browns and taupes. My test is the calf: zip them up over the socks you will actually wear, then sit down. What I would skip is a shaft that stops right at the widest part of the calf, because it cuts the leg in the wrong place.

Ankle boots

Ankle boots do the most work with trousers, so I judge them by where the shaft ends and how it meets the hem. The ANINE BING Hilda, the BY FAR Nieves, the Vince Valetta and the Tony Bianco Estelle are the black pairs I would wear with tailoring, and the Black Suede Studio Lainey 80 is the sharp, high one for evening. The Stuart Weitzman Stassi Zip Bootie 50 is black suede on a lower heel, and the ALOHAS Ambar is the brown suede version. The Ganni Ana and the Paris Texas Vera bring texture, the Tory Burch cap toe pair is the tan one, the Schutz Raffaela sits on a block heel, and the Schutz Siena in tiger print is the pair that makes plain jeans look deliberate. My test: wear them with your longest trousers and check that the hem falls over the shaft without bunching. What I would skip is a cropped trouser that stops an inch above the boot, because it shows the gap.

Western boots

The cowboy boot's tall, angled heel was made to keep the foot from sliding through a stirrup, which is part of why the shape still looks right with denim. The Ariat Round Up Collins and the Ariat Casanova are the classic stitched pairs, in brown and in black, and the TORAL Western Boot and the Sam Edelman Wyatt are the suede ones in warm browns. The Ganni Mid Shaft Embroidered Western Boot mixes white and red, the Seychelles Line Dance Boot is red suede, and the Jeffrey Campbell Darling is cow print, so those three are the statement pairs. The Dolce Vita Tomara, the Isabel Marant Duerto and the Aniye By Cowboy Baby Boot stop lower on the leg, and the Gabriela Hearst Capitana and the Johanna Ortiz Alma Latina are the designer versions. My tip: wear them with a straight jean that falls over the shaft, or a midi skirt that stops just above it. What I would skip is a full western look from hat to boot.

Slouch and over-the-knee boots

A slouch boot lets the suede or leather fold around the leg, so it fits more calves than a fitted shaft, and an over-the-knee boot does the opposite and covers the leg to the thigh. In the slouchy group, the Steve Madden Luca, the Schutz Mikki Up Cloak and the Isabel Marant Dalby fold the most in brown suede, the L'AGENCE Fletcher is a deep burgundy, and the Isabel Marant Elita and the ALOHAS Kalila are the black leather ones. The Free People Sway Low 2.0 is the easy, low-heeled pair. For over-the-knee, the Tony Bianco Fancy, the Stuart Weitzman Ultrastassi and the Seychelles Casting Call are the slim ones, the Black Suede Studio Oblik 70 pairs tan with black, and THE ATTICO Leon is the evening pair. My test: with an over-the-knee boot, the hem of the skirt or dress should meet or just cover the top of the boot. What I would skip is a wide-leg trouser over a slouch boot, because the folds are the point and they disappear.

Lug-sole, combat and moto boots

Lug soles and moto buckles are what I reach for on wet days, and they balance a floaty dress better than anything delicate. The Steve Madden Rocky, the Nakedvice Reese and the Stuart Weitzman Ren carry the moto buckles and straps, the ALLSAINTS Tori laces up like a classic combat boot, and the Ganni Cleated Zip Boot is the tan one with a deep tread. The Schutz Keira Up is slouchy black leather on a chunky sole, and the Vagabond Kenova and the Diesel Dhammer go tall, the Diesel with its logo plate on the shaft. My test: walk on a hard floor, because a heavy sole should still roll from heel to toe. What I would skip is a lug sole with a very slim, cropped trouser, since the foot ends up looking bigger than the rest of the outfit.

Boots for the everyday rotation

This group is useful for a second pair, a change of mood or an experiment that does not need to dominate the wardrobe. The Seychelles Milan Boot is the most straightforward, while the Sam Edelman Margo Boot has a polished line. The Jeffrey Campbell Fitted Boots are the sharper option, and the Senso Kandy Boot brings a little more personality. The Timberland Stone Street Mid Boot is the practical counterpoint. I would inspect the sole and the zip before choosing one. A boot can be excellent, but it still has to bend, close and stay on your foot without a fight.

Style Notes

Boots should be tried on with the socks and trousers you plan to wear, not with the optimistic thin sock offered in a fitting room. Check the instep, the calf opening and the sole, then walk long enough to notice whether your heel is lifting. Suede benefits from protection before its first outing, while leather needs a little room to soften without becoming loose. I would rather buy one excellent ankle boot and one genuinely warm pair than collect tall boots that work with nothing else. Store them upright, let them dry naturally, and never mistake a dramatic shaft for versatility. The best boot is the one that makes the outfit easier from the ground up.
