A dressy casual guide in five lessons: the silk blouse, good jeans, the midi skirt, loafers and kitten heels, and casual wedding dresses with no white. I have read the dress code on an invitation more times than I have read the menu.

The Dressy Casual Edit: Five Lessons for the Dress Code Nobody Can Define
Confessions of a dress code decoder
I read the dress code on an invitation within approximately four seconds of opening it, and then I spend the next four days on it. The date, the venue and whether the words "dressy casual" are sitting there at the bottom, smug and unexplained. I have no shame about this. I went deeper on a related idea in The Smart Casual Dress Code Edit: Five Lessons in Reading an Invitation That Says Nothing.
But somewhere between the invitation, the group chat and the closet floor, getting dressed for a mid-level occasion has gotten a little exhausting. We are told to look relaxed and also to look like we tried. We are told to wear jeans, but not those jeans, and to wear a dress, but not that dress. The verdict, for the record: nobody has ever solved this by staring at a hanger. I also put together The Casual Outfits Edit: Five Lessons in Getting Dressed on a Tuesday.
Which brings me to the Emily Post Institute, which, bless it, simply wrote the definition down. Its attire guide calls that dress code a versatile balance between formal and casual, and lists the ingredients for women plainly: a dress, a skirt with a dressy top, a dressy pants outfit, or nice jeans with a dressy top. That is the whole secret, and it fits on a sticky note. If you want to keep going, casual chic dress code is the one I would read next.
Some of what I have learned about it made me braver. Some of it made me put the sneakers back in the closet. And some of it only landed while standing at a wedding reception, holding a drink, wondering why my shoes had opinions. So, here are five lessons, in the order I wish someone had handed them over.

1. A silk blouse is the safest answer.
When a dress code is vague, I reach for silk the way other people reach for their phone. The Knot describes the look for women as what you might wear to a nice dinner on vacation, and a blouse with a little fall to it does that job faster than almost anything else. It makes dressy casual attire look intended instead of improvised.
The easiest place to start is the Heirlome Sybil draped silk-satin blouse in dark purple, or the Khaite Ivy silk-satin shirt in army green, which is the one I would pair with everything and apologize for nothing. Tom Ford has two in this group, a camel silk-satin blouse and a draped silk-georgette one in green, and the camel is the calmest thing you can put near a pair of dark trousers. For a little more personality there is the Nili Lotan Gaia polka-dot shirt in brown, the Saint Laurent crepe mesh silk blouse and the Loulou de Saison Gala blouse with its scarf detail.
The practical test: tuck it in, then untuck it, then stand in front of a mirror and decide which version looks more like you meant it. Whichever wins is the one for the invitation.
What I would skip: a silk blouse you are afraid of. If you spend the night guarding it from the canapés, it is not working for you.
Although a Sara Cristina Nerea silk blouse in navy is the one answer that forgives a lot of spills.

2. Good jeans count, if they are dark and pressed.
Emily Post lists nice jeans with a dressy top as a legitimate outfit, which I have decided to treat as a permission slip. The word doing the work is nice. Dark, clean, no distressing, and ideally with a crease that suggests an iron was in the building. That is the fine print behind casual attire for women, and it is the thing most people skip.
The group here leans dark on purpose. The Mother Patch Pocket Doozy flares and the Citizens of Humanity Nora wide-leg jeans come in dark denim, while Toteme's Twisted Seam straight-leg jeans and the Guest In Residence Weekender jeans go black. If denim still feels like a risk, the trousers carry the same idea: the Nili Lotan Tribeca tapered pants in burgundy, the Agolde Luna barrel-leg pants in taupe, and the TWP Slouchy BF twill pants in army green. Lisa Yang's wool and cashmere-blend barrel-leg pants in brown are the ones I would wear to a long dinner in November.
The practical test: sit down in them for ten minutes. If the waistband tells you about it, they are not dinner jeans.
What I would skip: anything with holes, fading or a whisker pattern. Those read as casual no matter what you put on top.
Although a good pair of wide legs with a silk blouse might be the most reliable outfit I know.

3. A midi skirt does the work of a dress with less fuss.
I think of the midi skirt as a dress that lets you choose the top. It is on Emily Post's list too, as a skirt and a dressy top, and The Knot suggests pairing a blouse with a silky slip skirt or polished trousers for a relaxed occasion. Both are describing the same easy trick: one good bottom, two or three tops, no stress.
The suede and leather ones are for evenings. Joseph's Helius paneled suede skirt in taupe and the two Nour Hammour pieces, the Alana paneled leather in black and the Garnier paneled suede in brown, are the ones that make a plain knit look considered without saying so. The Stouls Winona leather skirt in orange is for anyone who wants to be noticed by the coat check. Softer options are the Dries Van Noten draped cotton-jersey in brick, the Zimmermann Valiant ruffled knit in green and the Tibi crinkle charmeuse in mustard, which moves nicely when you walk. The Self-Portrait frayed tweed skirt in red is the one I would pick for a holiday lunch.
The practical test: walk across the room and turn quickly. A good midi should follow you a half second later, not wrap around your knees.
What I would skip: a midi that hits the widest part of your calf with a bulky boot. It shortens everything.
Although a black skirt and a white tee is, in fact, a lesson in itself.

4. Swap the sneakers for a loafer or a low heel.
The Knot lists loafers and heels among the right shoes for a casual wedding, and that matches my experience of watching rooms. Sneakers say you are running errands. A small heel or a polished loafer says you are going somewhere. The kitten heel has a funny history here: according to Vogue, it was marketed in the United States as the Sabrina heel, after the 1954 Audrey Hepburn film, which is a lot of glamour for a shoe you can walk to the subway in.
If you want the loafer, the Tod's leather loafers in dark brown, the Tod's suede lace-up loafers in chocolate, the Manolo Blahnik Bucky tasseled loafers in tan and the Proenza Schouler whip suede loafers in light brown are all sensible. If you want the heel, Loeffler Randall's Rio 35 gathered satin pump in dark brown and the Manolo Blahnik Caulon 50 velvet-trimmed satin pump in orange are the ones that dress up a pair of dark jeans in about four seconds. The Le Monde Beryl Babouche suede pump in army green is the quiet surprise.
The practical test: walk down a flight of stairs in them before you commit. A shoe you cannot take stairs in is not a dinner shoe.
What I would skip: the Danielle Frankel Alexa slingback in ivory for a wedding guest outfit. It is a lovely shoe, and it is also the one color that belongs to somebody else that day.
Although a good loafer with a silk blouse is, I believe, the actual dress code.

5. Casual wedding attire still means no white and no denim.
I will say the quiet part. A casual wedding is still a wedding, and the rules that matter do not take the day off. The Knot says tank tops, jeans, shorts, flip-flops and sneakers are generally off limits for casual wedding attire unless the couple says otherwise, and it adds that dressy casual wedding attire leans toward a nice dinner on vacation. Vogue is blunter about color: white is traditionally reserved for the bride, and the no-white rule also covers cream, ivory and beige.
So the dresses here are all colors that cannot be confused with a veil. The Oscar de la Renta Iris and Oscar de la Renta belted pleated dresses in navy and pink florals are the most formal of the group, and the Zimmermann Momentum linen and silk-blend dress in yellow is the one for a garden. Faithfull's Murano polka-dot halter in navy and the Lucia shirred dress in brown suit a long afternoon. The Cara Cara Miro in brown, Polo Ralph Lauren's corduroy midi in brown for cooler months and the Rohe cotton midi in red round it out.
The practical test: take a photo of yourself in the dress with the flash on. If it reads as white or cream, leave it at home.
What I would skip: anything that is technically denim, which includes the chambray dress you love. It is not a risk worth taking.
Although if the invitation says the couple wants jeans and boots, I would follow the invitation.

The outfit that fits in a carry-on
What the five lessons add up to is a short list: a silk blouse, a dark pair of jeans or trousers, a midi skirt, a loafer or a small heel, and a dress that is any color but white. It fits in a carry-on, and it covers most of what the invitation will ever ask.
I will still be tempted, of course. I will see a dress code written in script and spend four days on it, and I will still buy a fifth silk blouse because the drape looked sad on the hanger.
But now at least I know what the wording means, and the sticky note is on the mirror. Which is more than I can say about the shoes.
