The Five-Second Office Lip

In 1991, Bobbi Brown launched ten lipsticks at Bergdorf Goodman in New York. Her idea was lipstick that looked like lips, at a time when most color on the counter looked artificial and greasy. She had expected to sell a hundred in the first month and sold a hundred on the first day. That idea of natural, easy color is exactly what an office lip should be: something you can swipe on at your desk in five seconds, without a mirror, and still look put together in a meeting.

Keep three things in your desk drawer: a tinted balm, a lip pencil close to your natural color and a balm lipstick for bigger days. That covers every kind of workday. Swipe the balm on when you arrive, use the pencil for a meeting, and add the balm lipstick for a presentation or dinner after work. These lip balms and pencils are the kind of makeup nobody notices, only that you look well rested. Replace the balm in spring, and keep a spare in your coat pocket for the walk home.
