The Ganni Shirt Is Copenhagen In A Button Front

The Ganni Shirt Is Copenhagen In A Button Front

A ganni shirt is Copenhagen's answer to the button-front, which mostly means taking a familiar shape and putting one odd thing on it. Broderie anglaise on denim, a cropped bowling cut, a sheer printed polo. It is Scandinavian dressing without the minimalism people assume comes with it.

Copenhagen Is Not Minimal

The Scandinavian label stereotype is beige and restraint, and Ganni has spent a decade proving that wrong. Copenhagen Fashion Week has become the loudest week on the calendar for colour and print, and Ganni is a large part of why. A ganni shirt almost always has a detail that stops it being a basic: broderie anglaise punched into denim, a sheer panel where an opaque one should be, a print that does not match anything. That is the house approach and it is why the pieces work as the focus of an outfit rather than as a foundation.

Flannel, Poplin, Denim And The Polos

The range covers more ground than most. The Red Check Flannel is the seasonal anchor and the most conventional thing here. Black cotton poplin is the closest the brand gets to a plain shirt, and even that is cut with a fuller sleeve than standard. The Beige Washed Cotton Cropped Bowling Shirt is the most distinctly Ganni silhouette, boxy and short, sitting at the natural waist. The Black Broderie Anglaise Denim Shirt is the standout, applying an eyelet technique usually reserved for summer cottons to a heavy indigo. The two polos are doing something different again, with the red merino reading as a knit and the off-white sheer printed version as a layering piece. The multicolour printed silk and the blue stripe cover the loud and quiet ends of the print spectrum.

Our honest take

If you take one thing away, the broderie anglaise denim shirt is the most interesting garment in the range and the one that justifies the brand. It does something you will not find elsewhere at this level. The black poplin is the sensible purchase if you only buy one, because the fuller sleeve makes it more interesting than an equivalent from anywhere else. Ganni cuts boxy and short by default, so if you want length the cropped pieces will not work for you and no amount of sizing up will fix that. Merino polos pill and need a comb. Silk needs specialist cleaning. The flannel is the only piece here you can put in a machine without thinking about it. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together The White Button Down Shirt and The Pink Shirt Dress.
