The history of the Guerlain perfume house starts in Paris in 1828, with L'Heure Bleue, created in 1912, among its most famous scents. I go through its fragrances, powders, lips and the bee collection.

History of the Guerlain Perfume House: Its Most Famous Fragrances
The perfume house first
Before it was anything else, Guerlain was a perfumer, and two of its most famous scents still define the house. L’Heure Bleue, created by Jacques Guerlain in 1912, is built around iris and vanilla and a particular twilight melancholy. Shalimar followed in 1925 and became one of the defining oriental perfumes of the century, with L’Essence adding a richer vanilla take. These are not trend scents and never tried to be. They are reference points that modern perfumers still study.

Face powders as signatures
Guerlain is one of the few houses whose makeup became as recognisable as its perfume. Météorites, the multicolored powder pearls, have been a Guerlain signature since the late 1980s, designed to brighten rather than cover. Terracotta has been the house bronzer for decades, known for its mosaic of warm shades in a single compact. Both products are instantly identifiable on a vanity. That kind of recognition is rare for a powder.
Lips, refillable and balmy
Guerlain has leaned into refillable luxury long before it became fashionable. Rouge G lets you mix and match cases and bullets, turning a lipstick into a small accessory. KissKiss Bee Glow is a tinted balm that nods to the bee motif running through the house. Together they cover both the statement lip and the easy daily one. This is where the modern Guerlain customer usually starts.

The bee and the modern collection
The bee motif dates to the Eau de Cologne Impériale bottle Guerlain created for Empress Eugénie in 1853, and it still anchors the house today. Abeille Royale Double R Advanced Serum puts honey and royal jelly at the center of Guerlain skincare. L’Art & La Matière Spiritueuse Double Vanille belongs to the house’s high-perfumery collection and takes vanilla somewhere boozy and warm. These are the Guerlain products that show the house is still inventing, not just archiving. They are also the most giftable pieces in this edit.

Our honest take
If you take one thing away, it is that Guerlain is best understood through its perfumes first and everything else second. The heritage scents remain the reason to know the house, and they wear very differently from anything launched in the last decade. The powders and lipsticks are genuinely useful rather than purely decorative, which is not always true of luxury makeup. If you are new to Guerlain, start with a lipstick or the Météorites and work your way up to the perfumes. The archive rewards patience. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Guerlain Reimagines L'Heure Bleue, Its Original 1912 Perfume and Wow Hair Products for the Whole Wash Day.
