Ruby Woo began as a reformulation gone slightly wrong, and it became the reason the mac retro matte lipstick is still a reference point for red. This edit follows the Retro Matte bullets, a liquid cousin, the Viva Glam reds and the pencils that finish the job.
The Happy Accident Behind the MAC Retro Matte Lipstick

Ruby Woo was a mistake, and I mean that as the highest compliment. In 1999 the team at MAC was reworking Russian Red, the shade Madonna wore through her Blonde Ambition years, and the new base came out a little less matte and a lot brighter. Fans complained, Russian Red went back to its original formula, and the accident stayed on the shelf anyway. It turned into one of the best-selling lipsticks the brand has ever made. That is the story I keep in mind whenever someone asks me about the mac retro matte lipstick. MAC began in 1984 in Toronto, when makeup artist Frank Toskan and salon owner Frank Angelo got tired of makeup that did not photograph well and made their own. Everything about the brand still has that backstage logic: strong pigment, a formula built for hot lights, shade names that sound like inside jokes. Ruby Woo came out in 1999 as part of a Retro Matte collection, and it is still the shade I think of first when someone asks for a truly matte mouth. The first four bullets below are where I would begin.

The same finish, other formulas
Grid two takes the finish in a few directions. Runway Hit and Bronx are the same Retro Matte bullet as the first four, so you already know the drill: one dry, flat, completely matte layer that is built to last. High Drama is the liquid version, and it is the one I would hand to someone who hates the feeling of a bullet dragging across the lip.
The mini Ruby Woo lipstick is a different animal. It is a Silky Matte, which MAC says gives up to 12 hours of full-coverage color and up to eight hours of moisture, with coconut oil, shea butter and cocoa butter in the mix. That is a softer landing than the original, and the small size is perfect for a coat pocket. Here is my test for any of these: put the shade on, smile at a mirror and check your teeth. Longtime MAC artist Jennings says the blue in Ruby Woo makes teeth look whiter, and I have never found a reason to argue. Blot once with a tissue if you want the edges to look less like a stamp. If your lips are dry, fix that an hour before, not in the elevator.
Reds with a cause, and the pencils
Grid three is where I slow down, because Viva Glam is the most interesting thing MAC ever did with a lipstick. It launched in 1994 with RuPaul as its face, and MAC says 100 percent of the purchase amount of Viva Glam lipsticks goes to the Viva Glam Fund, which began with HIV and Aids causes and now also supports women, girls and the LGBTQ+ community. Viva Heart is the red one, and it gives back in the same way. The Chappell Roan version arrived in June 2026, co-created by the singer, a deep cherry that echoes her hair. Both are Silky Matte bullets, so the wear is comfortable rather than chalky.
The pencils are the quiet workhorses. MAC's lip pencils date to 1991, and the story goes that the Cherry pencil was a favorite of Selena's. Ruby Woo and Cherry are both blue-toned reds, so they sit under a bullet without a visible seam. What I would skip is filling your whole mouth with the pencil and calling it done, or lining last as an afterthought. Outline first, fill the center with the bullet, and let the pencil hold the edge so the red does not creep into fine lines.
Keep one in the bag
I do not think everyone needs a wardrobe of reds. I think most people need one matte red lipstick that they trust completely, and MAC has spent decades making that case with the same handful of shades. Pick the one that makes your teeth look bright and your skin look awake, keep it in the bag with its pencil, and reapply without a mirror if you have to. Reds like these reward confidence more than technique. The rest is just practice and a good tissue. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together MAC Velvet Teddy Lipstick and the Matte Nudes Like It and How to Prep Lips Before a Matte Lipstick. For the wider range beyond that matte, I covered MAC lipstick in lipsticks, liquid lips, liners and duos.
