A holiday party outfit guide in five lessons: office versus friends, sequins before six, party tops over trousers, one shiny accessory and flats in the bag. I have an opinion about every dress code and I am happy to share it.

The Holiday Party Outfit Edit: Five Lessons From Every Office Party I Have Survived
Confessions of a party-invitation overthinker
I start planning my holiday party outfit within approximately four seconds of the invitation landing, and the first questions are never about the food. It is the dress code, the venue and whether the boss is bringing a plus-one. I have no shame about this.
But somewhere between the office mixer, the friends' dinner and the thing that is technically a work event but has a DJ, getting dressed for December has gotten a little loud. We are told to sparkle and also to be subtle. We are told to wear the sequins and also to be able to sit down in them. The verdict, for the record: nobody has ever been remembered fondly for a dress they spent the whole night tugging.
Which brings me to Chanel. In 1926 a sketch of her calf-length, black, crepe de chine dress made its way into the pages of American Vogue, and the magazine called it "Chanel's Ford," after the Model T, as the frock that all the world will wear. A plain dress, sold as a plan for everyone. That is still the best idea I know for a christmas party outfit: make one decision well, then let a single detail do the talking.
Some of what I have learned made me braver. Some of it made me sit down. And some of it only came after standing in a hallway at eleven o'clock holding two shoes. So, here are five lessons for the holiday party outfit, in the order I wish someone had handed them over.

1. The office party and the friends party need different outfits.
I used to own one party look and deploy it everywhere, which is how a sequined mini ended up at a quarterly team celebration. Emily Post describes festive attire as cocktail party attire with a seasonal and festive holiday touch, and that is exactly the right dial for work: dressed up, but still dressed for the people who sign your reviews. A career coach quoted by CIO puts it more bluntly, saying that if your attire is not appropriate for work, it is probably not appropriate for the holiday party either.
So the office version is the Isabel Marant Aloise satin maxi with its lace trim, or the Miguelina burgundy satin midi, both of which cover plenty and still read as an occasion. The Dries Van Noten floral-jacquard satin midi, in green or purple, is the one I would send to the dinner with a client. The friends version is where the Alaia strapless velvet midi, the Bernadette embellished mini and the Gucci one-shoulder midi come out. Anyone searching for holiday outfits women can wear to both will find the satin is the common thread. Velvet, by the way, was among the most luxurious cloths of the late medieval period, according to the V&A, so wearing it to a party is practically historical research.
The practical test: sit down in the dress in front of a mirror and count to thirty. If you adjust anything, it is a friends dress.
What I would skip: a dress you have only ever seen standing up.
Although a plain black dress, as Chanel suggested, is the one answer that works for both.

2. Sequins before six work when the rest is plain.
Sequins started as a flex. When Tutankhamun's tomb was opened in 1922, gold sequinlike disks were found sewn onto his garments, and the word itself traces back to the zecchino, a gold coin minted in Venice. So when someone says a sequin top is a lot, historically they are correct. The trick is to keep everything underneath it quiet.
The Missoni sequin-embellished metallic crochet blouse is the loudest thing in this lineup, and I would give it black trousers and nothing else to say. The Rabanne chainmail-embellished silk tank in burgundy is almost armor, in a good way, and the Pucci chain-embellished halterneck is for the person who wants the room to turn around once. The Veronica Beard embellished black tank and the Zimmermann ruffled metallic knit are the softer picks, and the Saint Laurent Cassandre knit T-shirt is a party top that looks like it only came to the party for a friend. Holiday outfits tend to be judged in motion, so choose the top that still looks composed after a hug.
Early evening is when this works best, because daylight leftovers make shine look deliberate rather than desperate. The practical test: stand by a window at four in the afternoon. If the top still looks good in plain light, it will look excellent under a string of bulbs.
What I would skip: sequins on the top and the skirt at the same time, unless the invitation says disco.
Although the 1930s gelatin sequins melted when they got wet or too warm, which makes a modern dance floor look generous.

3. A party top over trousers beats a dress you cannot sit in.
The dress is the obvious answer, and for most holiday parties it is also the one that makes people hover near the edge of the room. Emily Post lists a dressy pants outfit or separates right alongside the cocktail dress for festive attire, which is the permission slip I keep in my pocket.
Picture her in the Staud Jayden organza wide-leg pants with the sequin trim, a plain black knit on top, walking in with both hands free. The Missoni sequined crochet-knit wide-legs are for a night that is meant to be loud. The Liberowe gold metallic jacquard slim-fit pants do the work of a statement without the drama, and the Sharon Wauchob ruffled white silk wide-leg pants are the quiet option for someone who would rather not shimmer. For skirts, the Saint Laurent rose gold metallic leather midi is sleek, the Blaze Milano sequin maxi is for dancing, and the Dôen lace-trimmed silk-satin midi is the one that works with a cardigan on the train ride over. Most holiday party outfits that work are built this way, with one loud piece and one calm one.
The practical test: take a step up onto a curb in the outfit. If the hem or waistband fights you, it will fight you on the dance floor, too.
What I would skip: a mini skirt for a seated dinner. the Aflalo polka-dot satin-jacquard mini is delightful, but I would save it for standing.
Although the best-dressed person at most parties is the one who can reach the buffet without a plan.

4. One shiny accessory per outfit is plenty.
Everyone has a friend who arrives in a sequin top, metallic shoes, a crystal clutch and large earrings, and still asks whether it is too much. It is. Pick one thing to be the shine, and let the rest of the look rest.
This is the lesson that makes the most of a good clutch. The Tom Ford Aura satin clutch in burgundy is the grown-up pick, the Victoria Beckham Kizette embellished leather clutch is the one that is a little bit rock and roll, and the Brunello Cucinelli bead-embellished shearling clutch is warm in a way a metal frame never is. The Hunting Season leopard suede Opera clutch is for people who want their one detail to have a pulse. For the ears, the Khaite gold-plated Visage earrings are the simplest, the Zimmermann Plume pair adds a touch of enamel color, the By Pariah recycled sterling silver Flux earrings are cooler toned, and the Nikos Koulis Universe earrings in white gold, diamond and enamel are the heirloom-in-waiting.
That small rule of one is old news in a way: the sequin began as a coin sewn onto a garment, meant to say one thing about its wearer. The practical test: look in the mirror and remove the last thing you put on.
What I would skip: matching earrings and a loud clutch, unless the dress is entirely black.
Although if the earrings are doing a lot, the clutch can stay home and the hands can hold a drink.

5. Pack flats in the bag.
Every holiday party has a moment, usually just after the toast, when the heels start to negotiate. I am not above bringing a second pair, and I do not think anyone should be. In 1956 Repetto made its Cendrillon ballet flat for Brigitte Bardot, and the shoe has been quietly rescuing parties ever since.
For the heels, The Gianvito Rossi 95 crepe-satin pumps in red are the classic, the Aquazzura Contour 105 metallic pumps are for a night that is mostly seated, and the Jimmy Choo Skye 70 crystal mesh mules are the sparkly choice. The Cult Gaia Reign 70 and the Manolo Blahnik Caleva 10 are the metallic sandals, and the Caleva low heel makes it the one I would reach for first. Then the flats that deserve their own bag: the Nodaleto Bulla Ruby embellished metallic ballet flats, and the Alaia La Ballerine in blue mesh with crystals, which fold into the rest of the outfit like a dress shoe in disguise.
The practical test: walk to the end of the block and back before you leave the house, in the shoes you plan to wear for the night. If you have doubts, the flats go in the bag.
What I would skip: leaving the flats at home because they feel like admitting defeat. They are insurance.
Although the Nodaleto velvet thong sandals might be the only heels I would wear for the walk home.

The party after the party
Here is what these five lessons add up to for me: pick the room first, keep the shine to one thing, and bring a way home. A holiday party outfit is mostly a series of small kindnesses to the person you will be at eleven o'clock.
I will still be tempted, of course. Someone will say the dress code is festive, and I will spend a ridiculous amount of time deciding what that means for a Tuesday in December. That is fine. Part of the joy is the getting ready.
So wear the sequins before six, keep the flats nearby, and let a plain black dress take the credit when anyone asks.
