The INKEY List Caffeine Eye Cream and Other Depuffing Picks

The INKEY List caffeine eye cream is a light cream for puffy, tired eyes, and it sits at the center of this edit. I paired it with caffeine serums, gels, patches and cooling tools for every morning face.

The INKEY List launched in September 2018, started by former Boots colleagues Colette Laxton and Mark Curry. Curry messaged Laxton on LinkedIn in early 2017, and the idea was to name the active in every product and explain it in plain words. Founders have said the first stock sold out in about four weeks, and the brand answered thousands of skin questions in its first year. That plain-spoken approach is why I start here.

The INKEY List caffeine eye cream is a lightweight, hydrating cream with caffeine, Matrixyl 3000 peptide and an albizia bark extract. The PDP says it is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles. It is the easiest place to begin if you want an everyday cream rather than a gadget.

Around it, innisfree Green Tea Caffeine Eye Serum comes with a cooling rollerball, 2 percent caffeine and 3 percent niacinamide. belif Aqua Bomb is a gel with caffeine, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. Caudalie Resveratrol-Lift is a fragrance-free gel cream with pro-collagen peptides, and Dermalogica Awaken Peptide is an oil-free gel with caffeine and tetrapeptides. YISE Beauty Wide Awake has a sheer pink tint for mornings. Drunk Elephant A-Shaba is a night serum with 3 percent caffeine and 0.1 percent retinol. Clarins Double Serum Eye is a two-in-one concentrate.

A quick test: dab a rice grain sized amount on the outer corner of one eye for a few days before using it all over.

Patches for a quick morning fix

Patches are the fastest way I know to look awake before a coffee is finished. Rare Beauty Find Comfort has eight pairs of cooling patches with caffeine, green tea and hyaluronic acid. rhode Peptide Eye Prep are cooling hydrogel patches with caffeine and peptide that are fragrance free. Topicals Faded Under Eye masks use caffeine with kojic acid and arbutin to fade the look of dark circles. Biodance Caviar PDRN is a nourishing patch with caffeine and PDRN, and Peter Thomas Roth Instant FIRMx is a collagen patch made to tighten under-eye bags.

The Caffeine Eye Mask Patches in Cucumber are a bio-cellulose mask designed to work in five minutes. Beauty of Joseon Revive are wing-shaped hydrogel patches with retinal and ginseng root water. Dieux Forever Eye Mask is a different idea: a reusable silicone patch made of medical-grade silicone that holds your own serum or cream close to the skin.

Pairing tip: keep the patches in the fridge, and press them on for ten minutes while you brush your teeth. The Dieux masks go over your regular eye cream, so the two work as a team.

What I would skip: wearing the retinal patches the same night as a retinol eye serum. Choose one active at a time around the eyes.

Cool tools and rollerballs

If patches are the quick fix, tools are the ritual. The Rose Quartz Facial Roller has a large and small end, and it is a natural stone, so colors vary. The Rose Quartz Gua Sha is meant to massage and sculpt the face and neck. Both are best kept in the fridge if you like a cold morning.

Clinique All About Eyes Serum is a fast-drying serum in a cooling rollerball with caffeine and panthenol, tested by ophthalmologists and fragrance free. Jack Black Eye Balm is a vegan stainless steel rollerball with clear gel. Dr. Idriss The Depuffer is a soothing roll-on with arnica, centella and niacinamide for facial puffiness. Sofie Pavitt Face Nice Ice comes as eight freezable pods with niacinamide, green tea and ashwagandha. Dezi Skin Agua Fresca is a cooling eye cream with peptides, mucin, aloe and guayusa.

Pairing tip: use the roller after your eye product, and roll from the inner corner outward without pressing hard.

What I would skip: the Peace Out Oil Control Reusable Facial Roller anywhere near the eyes. It is an oil-absorbing roller for shiny foreheads and noses, not for the eye area.

Choosing what your eyes need

Match the format to your morning. A cream, like The INKEY List or Caudalie, is the daily base. A rollerball or gel is quick and cool before makeup. Patches and pods are for the mornings when you need to look rested fast. Puffiness and dark circles have different causes, so I would not expect one product to do everything, and I would give a new eye product several weeks to show anything. Start with one, keep a gentle hand, and add a tool when it feels like a treat instead of a chore.
