The Marine Serre Top Turned A Crescent Into A Signature

The Marine Serre Top Turned A Crescent Into A Signature

A marine serre top is identifiable from across a room because of one motif: a crescent moon repeated across the whole surface. Recycled jersey second skins, mesh flock bodysuits and denim bra tops. It is one of the few contemporary labels whose signature is genuinely its own.

The Moon As A Signature

Marine Serre won the LVMH Prize in 2017 and the crescent moon has been on essentially everything since. It works as a signature because it is abstract enough not to read as a logo and specific enough that nobody mistakes it for anything else. A marine serre top in the Moon jersey is instantly attributable without a single letter of branding, which is a harder thing to achieve than most houses manage. The label also builds a large part of its range from recycled and regenerated materials, which is stated rather than marketed and has been true since before it became standard practice.

Second Skin, Mesh Flock And The Rest

Second Skin is the house's name for its tight recycled jersey, and it is the most recognisable construction here. The black Second Skin t-shirt and the white tube top both use it, and both are cut to sit against the body with no ease at all. Moonogram mesh flock, on the burgundy t-shirt and the black bodysuit, uses a raised velvet-feel motif on a sheer ground, which is the most textural option and the one that needs a layer underneath or a decision not to. The pink Moon gathered short sleeve top and the white Moon printed camisole are the softer, more conventional pieces. The blue denim Moon bra top is the most structured. The black Moon logo ribbed tank is the quietest thing in the range and the easiest to wear on a normal day.

Our honest take

If you take one thing away, the Second Skin pieces are the ones the brand is known for and the ribbed tank is the one you will wear most. That tension is worth being honest about before buying. Second Skin is genuinely skin-tight and does not relax, so it is a specific silhouette rather than a flexible one. Mesh flock is sheer by design and the motif will not hide anything. Recycled jersey behaves like regular jersey in the wash but the printed moons will fade with heat, so cold water only. If you want one piece that carries the whole idea without committing to the silhouette, the printed camisole is the most forgiving entry point in the range.
