The Satin Skirt Has Become a Daytime Argument

The Satin Skirt Has Become a Daytime Argument

Silk and satin skirts in soft finishes, from minis to maxis. I show how I wear them in daylight with a plain knit or a tee.

The satin skirt is usually sold as eveningwear, but the way I actually wear one now is in daylight, with a sweater and flat shoes. What changed is the finish. A duchesse or crepe-back satin with a soft sheen reads like a good pair of trousers, while a high-gloss satin still reads like a party.

In the first grid, Saint Laurent's Satin Pencil Skirt and Satin Lace Skirt are the most polished, and SEV's Satin Straight Skirt is the plain version I would wear to an office. Alex Perry's Draped Duchess Satin Mini and AKNVAS's Mary Dutchess mini show what a stiffer duchesse does to a short hem, while Courreges's Circle Satin Mini and Tibi's Tech Satin Side Ruffle Mini are the playful ones. LaPointe has two long ones, the Satin Wrap Maxi and the Lightweight Satin Asymmetric Maxi, and ILKYAZ OZEL's Medea, SAU LEE's Lila and Enza Costa's Textured Satin Celeste are the fluid shapes with movement built in. The silk end of the grid is quieter: Reformation's McCall is a soft almond midi, SIR.'s Noria is a dark plum silk midi, Sablyn's Keri is a bias-cut skirt with a lace panel and Marni's silk midi is printed in mint.

The test I trust: stand by a window and look at the skirt in daylight. If the shine reads as texture rather than as a spotlight, it will work with a plain knit or a tee on an ordinary day.

Satin skirts for the day

Rixo, Róhe, Dorothee Schumacher and Joseph make the satin skirts I reach for in daylight, in matte finishes that sit calmly under a chunky knit.

ALIGNE's Harris, AKNVAS's Vera, Bardot's Pheobe and Damson Madder's Delphia are the easy midis. Enza Costa's Satin Bias Cut Skirt and Vince's Satin Maxi Skirt are the long, plain ones, and For Love & Lemons' Adrift and SAU LEE's Pia bring a little more shape.

Bias cuts, lace and prints for a quieter look

This group runs from the Favorite Daughter silk-blend midi to Paige and Guizio, with minis and lace-trimmed slips mixed in. Go for a long midi and flat boots if you want it calm.

The lace-trimmed slips are the softest way in. Good American, Helsa, Sanctuary, Bardot's Elisan and Damson Madder's Elea all put a lace edge on satin, which makes the shine feel lived in. There are three playful minis from self-portrait, with sequin flowers, polka dots and a bow, and AREA's crystal mini is the one for a night out.

For everyday, Reformation's Alexa, RAILS's Romina, SAME's satin maxi and the SKIMS heavy stretch satin mini are the plainest, and GANNI's duchesse bubble mini is the one with volume. What I would skip: a satin skirt and a satin top together in daylight. One shiny piece is enough.

Satin skirts in every length

A daytime case for satin

A satin skirt earns its place by being less precious than its reputation. Pair a longer satin shape with a plain top when the fabric already has enough presence, then decide whether a flat boot or a simple pump makes more sense for the day. The best version does not make daytime look like a rehearsal for dinner. It lets the skirt be fluid and lets everything around it stay grounded.

The outfit I keep coming back to is a bias-cut midi with a grey crewneck and loafers, which is about as far from special occasion as satin gets. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together The Midi Skirt Is Back on Its Own Terms and The Mini Skirt Styling Rules Nobody Tells You.
