The Toiletry Bag Is the Most Honest Thing You Own: Twelve Good Ones

The Toiletry Bag Is the Most Honest Thing You Own: Twelve Good Ones

A toiletry bag says more about how someone actually lives than anything hanging in their closet. The good ones now come in two camps: structured cases that open on a counter and soft pouches that pass as accessories. These are the twelve I would pack, from hard vanity cases to leather pouches.

Every trip I take, the toiletry bag is the first thing I pack and the last thing I close, which tells you it does most of the work. It is also the most honest object I own. Anyone can pack a nice sweater, but the bag holding half-used serums, a toothbrush in a sandwich bag and three nearly empty sunscreens is the real portrait. For years I used whatever free pouch came with a gift set. Then I watched a friend unzip a case that stood up on its own on a tiny hotel sink, every bottle upright and visible, and I understood what I had been doing wrong. The category has split along those lines. On one side are structured cases that open like a small cabinet; on the other are soft pouches that look like they belong in a handbag. I use both, for different jobs. The first grid is the structured camp, the cases built for a full routine and a small counter, from Etoile Collective's oval case to the RIES vanity bag. Away's cosmetic case and the small CEE Clear case also make airport security much less of a production.

The everyday makeup bag

The bag that lives in my tote gets more abuse than any case. It needs to hold a lipstick, a concealer, a mini hand cream and a few hair ties without turning into a junk drawer. Jillian Dempsey and Violet Grey both make simple makeup bags that do this without fuss, and the large Béis pouch is the one I recommend to friends who keep losing things at the bottom of their bags. Belletto is the dressier option, the kind of bag that looks fine sitting on a restaurant table. My one rule is that anything living in a handbag should wipe clean, because something will leak eventually.

Makeup bags and pouches for the daily kit

Pouches that pass as accessories

The last group is where the bag starts behaving like a purse. A leather pouch from The Row or Bembien, or Prada's nylon one, can hold a full skincare kit inside a suitcase and then carry a phone and keys at dinner. Stoney Clover Lane's T-seam pouch is the brightest of the four and the easiest to spot in a packed bag. What I would skip is the hanging organizer with fourteen mesh compartments. It promises order and delivers a heavy, lopsided thing that never hangs where you need it, and half the pockets stay empty. One good case and one good pouch cover almost every trip.

More bags for the bathroom shelf

Tory Burch, Calpak, Think Royln and Baggu add toiletry bags and pouches in different sizes, plus a couple of brand-direct pouches. A clear pocket helps at the airport.

Pack it once, properly

The best thing a good bag does is make you edit. When the case only fits what fits, you stop packing the backup of the backup. Choose the structure that matches your counter space, add a pouch for the handbag, and decant the rest. Your future self at a tiny hotel sink will be grateful.
