Velvet makes a simple outfit look like you thought about it. I like it best when it is the only dressy thing in the room, so the rest stays plain. A burgundy coat like Aspesi's ribbed one works over jeans all winter, and TOAST's strapless gown in the same deep wine is the one I would wear to a wedding.

 

For minis, Sau Lee does them in green and pink with little cutouts, and Caroline Constas has a black one with a rounded collar that feels sweet rather than stiff. Velvet trousers are the easiest way to wear it every day: Veronica Beard's Gracie in burgundy and the PAIGE Sasha in a flared leg both go with a plain white tee and flat boots. Look for a soft, dense pile that does not crush the first time you sit down.
