The best thrift flips start with one jacket that fits your shoulders and a plan for what goes under it. I like to think in layers: a blazer, a knit, a denim piece and something with a little pattern, all worn loose and slightly mismatched.

 

Start with the blazers. The Yves Saint Laurent leather blazer and the navy pinstriped one both look better over a plain tee and straight jeans, and the black Prada blazer works with white trousers. For knits, a Polo Ralph Lauren cable sweater and an ivory Burberry cardigan can be pulled over a collared shirt. Add Everlane straight-leg jeans and a Free People denim vest to break up the dark colors, then finish with a Ralph Lauren plaid bomber for a weekend look. Check the shoulder seams and sleeve length first, since a tailor can fix almost everything else.
