Tonal Layers

Tonal Layers

One color, several textures, worn head to toe in navy, black and stone. A men's edit of linen shirts, terry crews and easy trousers that match without being flat.

Dressing in one color works when the fabrics do the talking. I stay inside navy, black or stone and change the texture instead: a linen shirt over a cotton tee, a terry crewneck, a pair of tailored trousers with some weight to them. The Reigning Champ terry crews in navy and black are the easiest base, and the Alex Mill cashmere sweater is the one I would add when I want it to look finished.

For shirts, Faherty's Laguna in washed black and Ancora's navy resort shirt both have enough texture to keep a head to toe look from going flat. Bather's linen pants and NN07's Bill trousers handle the bottom half, and a stone Zara linen set shows how the same idea works in a lighter shade. Keep every piece within one color family and vary the surface, and it will always look planned.
