Too Faced Lip Injection and the Tingle That Promised No Needles

Too Faced lip injection is the plumper that made a tingle part of the routine, and the brand says it is needle free. This edit follows it from the original gloss and liners to the balms, oils and a whipped blush around it.

There is a line on the Too Faced product page that I think explains why Too Faced lip injection became its own category: you may feel a tingle, but this formula is 100% needle free. The brand says it made Lip Injection so everyone has access to plump lips without resorting to needles, and that the formula launched in 2005. That is a strange promise to build a product on, and a very Too Faced one. Jerrod Blandino and Jeremy Johnson launched the brand in 1998 after starting out behind the Estée Lauder counters, and they have always leaned into humor, pink and a slightly naughty name. Every too faced lip plumper in the range shares that DNA, and the brand says you may feel a tingle. The two plumpers at the top of the edit are the maximum-plump formula in Clear and in Yummy Bear, a red pink with a hot pink pearl. Next to them sit two liners, Post-Op Pink and Puffy Nude, which the brand says plump for up to eight hours and stay waterproof for up to 10.

The plumper, in other shapes

The plumper has grown a whole family, and the second grid is a good tour of it. The Mini is the same maximum-plump formula in a smaller tube, which suits a bag. The Cooling Instant Lip Plumper Gloss in a warm rosy nude is the most comfortable of the group if the tingle is new to you. Plumping Clicks is a strawberry-scented stick, so you can reapply without a mirror. The Chocolate Mousse set pairs a Chocolate Soleil pencil with Kissing Jelly, a lip oil gloss with sunflower and jojoba oils. The brand's claims are about how lips look and feel, and I read them that way: lips look fuller, not permanently changed. Wait a few minutes after a plumping lip gloss before you add lipstick, and blot once.

The softer side of the brand

The balms and tints are what I reach for on days I do not want a tingle. Pillow Balm is a liquid lip balm with fruit oils, conditioning butters and hyaluronic acid, in a soft peachy pink. Kissing Jelly comes in clear with gold shimmer and is the non-sticky one. Kissing Juicy Tint is a balmy gel-cream in a peachy nude, and Cloud Crush is a whipped lip and cheek color in a muted coral. What I would skip is stacking a plumper and a tint on the same day if your lips are chapped. Start with Pillow Balm, let it sit, and save the tingle for a day when lips feel comfortable.

How I would wear it

My rule with this brand is to treat the tingle as a feature, not a test of endurance. Start with the gloss, learn how your lips react, then add a liner if you want a defined edge. Keep the balms and the blush nearby for the rest of the week. The founders built a company on the idea that makeup should be fun, and the range still behaves that way. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Buxom Lip Plumper and the Plumping Glosses That Actually Tingle and Tea Tree Shampoo.
