Travel Size Beauty That Earns Its Space in Your Carry-On

Travel size beauty only earns a place in the carry-on if it does two jobs or keeps a routine intact. These are the minis, travel sprays and small tubes I would actually pack, from a soy face wash to a dry shampoo that saves a hotel morning.

The liquids rule has shaped more beauty routines than any trend. In August 2006, after a foiled plot involving liquid explosives on transatlantic flights, airport security banned liquids in carry-ons altogether, and by the end of that year the rule had settled into the one we still live with: containers of 3.4 ounces, or 100 milliliters, all in one quart bag, one bag per person. Almost twenty years later I still stand at the bathroom counter the night before a trip, deciding what makes the cut.

My test for travel size skincare is simple. It has to either do two jobs or keep a routine I actually care about intact. Everything else stays home.

Cleanser first, because a hotel bar of soap can undo a week of good skin in one night. Fresh's Soy face wash is gentle enough for morning and night and takes off everyday makeup. Tatcha's Rice Wash is a cream cleanser that leaves skin soft instead of squeaky, and Youth To The People's Superfood cleanser is the one I pack for humid places. If you wear real makeup or SPF all day, Clinique's Take The Day Off balm melts it off, then rinses clean.

Then one thing that multitasks. Summer Fridays' Jet Lag is a mask and a moisturizer at once, exactly what dry cabin air calls for. Josie Maran's argan oil goes on face, cuticles and the ends of your hair. Dieux's Instant Angel is a richer moisturizer for cold trips, and Glow Recipe's Watermelon Glow dew drops sit nicely under makeup when you land looking tired.

The travel spray is the grown-up souvenir

A travel spray is the smartest way I know to test a perfume properly. A paper strip at a counter tells you almost nothing. A week of wearing something on your own skin, in your own weather, tells you everything, and a small spray fits in a pocket or a makeup bag without the weight or the worry of a glass bottle.

These are the scents people stop me to ask about, which is a good sign they carry without being loud. Yves Saint Laurent's Black Opium opens with black coffee over white flowers and vanilla, the one I reach for on a night flight. Viktor&Rolf's Flowerbomb is a warm floral with rose and peony, sweet but polished. Miu Miu's Miutine smells like wild strawberry and brown sugar, playful in a way that suits a beach week.

Valentino's Donna Born in Roma and Mugler's Alien Goddess both lean on bourbon vanilla and jasmine, and it is fun to smell them side by side, because they land very differently on skin. Burberry Goddess is vanilla three ways, soft and warm for a cold city. Kayali's Yum Boujee Marshmallow is strawberry and whipped vanilla, the most dessert-like of the group. Prada's Paradigme is the fresh one, bergamot and geranium over ambery woods, and it is the spray I would hand to someone who says they do not like perfume.

One practical note. Spray on skin and clothes right after a hotel shower, while your pulse points are warm, and you will still smell it well into the afternoon.

Makeup and hair in the smallest sizes

Makeup is where a packed bag gets heavy fast, so I keep it to a few small things that fix the most. One mascara, one concealer, one setting spray, and something for hair.

Mini mascaras are the easiest win, because a full tube tends to dry out before you finish it anyway. Lancôme's Lash Idôle lifts and fans lashes without clumps. Benefit's Fan Fest pushes lashes side to side for a wide-eyed look, and Yves Saint Laurent's Lash Clash has the oversized brush for full volume at a wedding. The NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer mini covers a red nose after a long flight and doubles as a spot corrector.

Setting spray does more on a trip than at home, because heat, humidity and air conditioning all work against your face. Charlotte Tilbury's Airbrush Flawless spray is alcohol free and oil free and holds makeup for hours. Milk Makeup's Hydro Grip spray keeps things dewy rather than matte, which I prefer after a flight.

Hair is where the small sizes really save a morning. Living Proof's PhD dry shampoo absorbs oil and adds body, so you can skip a wash in a hotel shower with terrible water pressure. Moroccanoil's Treatment oil smooths frizz in a humid climate and brings a little heat protection with it, so it goes on before the hotel hair dryer.

Pack it the night before

I pack my beauty bag the night before, never the morning of, because that is when the forgotten cleanser gets remembered. Lay everything out on a towel, then take one thing away. You will not miss it.

A few habits help. Put the quart bag of liquids on top so security takes seconds. Squeeze the air out of tubes before you close them, since pressure changes in the cabin make them burp. Keep the mascara and concealer in a jacket pocket for the landing touch up. And when a mini runs out, notice if you missed it. That is really what minis are for: finding out what you love before you commit to the big bottle.
