Pull-on trousers have no zip, no button and a hidden elastic waist. Whether they read as professional comes down to four things, and none of them is the waistband.
Trousers With No Zip: Do Pull-On Pants Actually Look Professional?

The waistband is not what people notice
The worry about pull-on trousers is always the same: that an elastic waist will be obvious, and that obvious means casual. In practice almost nobody looks at your waistband. They look at the line from hip to floor.
What gives a trouser away as loungewear is a shallow rise that lets the fabric bunch at the front, a leg that tapers into a soft point rather than falling straight, and a fabric with visible stretch shine. A pull-on trouser that gets those three things right is indistinguishable from a zipped one at conversational distance.
What genuinely does read casual is a visible drawstring left hanging, a contrast waistband in a different fabric, and a very high stretch content that clings at the thigh.
So the question is not whether a trouser has a zip. It is whether the rise is high enough to sit at the natural waist, whether the fabric has enough weight to hang, and whether the leg keeps its width to the hem. Judge on those and a lot of pull-on styles pass easily.

Fabric decides everything
Ponte is the workhorse. It is a double-knit, so it has structure without lining, holds a press-free crease line and does not shine. It is the closest a knit fabric comes to behaving like a woven, which is why it dominates the pull-on category.
Linen is the opposite trade. It hangs beautifully and breathes, and it creases within an hour of sitting down. A high-waisted pintuck linen wide leg looks superb standing and rumpled by lunch, which is fine if your day is mostly vertical and less fine if it is mostly meetings.
Vegan leather has become genuinely good in the last few years. It reads as a deliberate outfit rather than a comfort choice, which is exactly what you want from a pull-on. The caveat is heat; it does not breathe.
Then there is denim. A pull-on wide leg in a firm, dark, low-stretch denim is the single most useful item in this whole category, because it covers everything short of a formal office and requires no thought at all.

How to make them read as tailoring
Three adjustments, all cheap.
First, the hem. A wide leg should break just above the floor with the shoe you wear most, and a pull-on trouser is more likely than a zipped one to come in a generic length. Get them shortened. It costs very little and it is the single biggest visual upgrade available.
Second, the top. Tuck something with structure into the waist, or wear something that ends at the hip bone. A long, soft top over a soft trouser is what makes the whole outfit read as leisure. A crisp poplin shirt, a washable silk button down or a squared-off blazer immediately reverses that.
Third, the shoe. A loafer, a mule or a low block heel does more work here than any trouser detail. Trainers with a wide leg pull-on trouser will read as travel clothes no matter how good the fabric is.
Get those three right and nobody will ask about the waistband, because nothing else in the outfit is signalling comfort.

Our honest take
Yes, they pass. We would not bother writing this if the answer were no.
The honest caveat is that the category has a wide quality range, wider than zipped trousers, because the elastic waist lets makers get away with a less precise fit through the hip. So the pieces that work are the ones with a defined rise and a heavier fabric, and the ones that do not are the thin, very stretchy ones that are essentially leggings with a wider leg.
Buy one pair in ponte and one in a firm denim, hem both, and pair them with a shirt that has some starch in it.
If you take one thing away, make it this: the leg line and the hem length decide whether a trouser looks professional, not the closure. Fix those two and an elastic waist becomes a private convenience rather than a public statement.
