A room reads as considered rather than unfinished when the things in it are specific. That is the whole difference, and it has almost nothing to do with how much is in the room. A tray that is the right size for what actually lands on the hall table. A bowl you use rather than one that holds decorative spheres. A vase sized for the flowers you buy, not the flowers in the catalogue. Objects that do one job well are what stop a pared-back room feeling like a rental. The failure mode of quiet decorating is buying vague things, because vague things read as filler no matter how expensive they are. So start from the job. What gets put down in this spot every day, and what would hold it properly. Then buy that, in one material, at a size you have measured. Everything else can wait, and most of it can wait indefinitely.

Once you take pattern out of a room you need something else to stop it feeling flat, and the answer is weight. Cushions and covers in linen, ribbed cashmere, velvet and heavy cotton give a sofa depth through texture and density rather than print. The practical version of this is that you should be able to feel the difference with your eyes shut. A cushion cover at a hundred dollars in a slubby washed linen does more for a plain sofa than a printed one at three times the price, because the interest is in the surface rather than the design. Two notes. First, buy inserts separately and buy them a size up, since a limp cushion undoes everything. Second, mixing pattern into a quiet room is entirely allowed, and several of the pieces here are patterned. The rule is that the pattern should be one voice in the room rather than the reason for it.

Every quiet room needs one object that was not bought new, and this is the piece that does the most work for the least money. It reads as depth. Buy for the surface rather than the shape here. Patina, crazing, an uneven glaze, a repaired rim: these are the qualities you cannot order, and they are the reason the object works. Do not clean it back. Do not match it to anything. One is genuinely enough, and two starts to look like a collection, which is a different and much busier project. Check the base for stability if it is a lamp, and check for hairlines around any rim, since a crack that is only cosmetic today is a break in a year.

We would spend less on this kind of room than most people expect and more time measuring. The pieces that make a quiet room work are small, specific and usually cheap, and the money is better held back for the one old thing. We would also push back on the idea that quiet means beige and empty. A room can be very calm and still hold a strong colour or a strong pattern, as long as it holds one of them rather than five. The genuine mistake is not owning too much. It is owning things that were bought without a job to do. And a room allowed to be slightly boring is a room you can actually rest in, which is the point. If you take one thing away, before you buy an object, name out loud what it is going to hold.
