A discounted queen mattress is only a good find if it suits the way you sleep and you can still send it back. Here is what I would check first, plus the foam, hybrid and protector options I would look at.

What to Check Before You Buy a Queen Mattress on Sale
You are lying on your back in a showroom with your shoes hanging off the end of a bed, while a stranger asks how it feels. You have about ninety seconds to decide on something you will sleep on every night for years. Or you are on your phone at midnight, and every mattress site has a banner at the top that seems to end tomorrow. Neither is a great way to choose.
A queen mattress with a discount on it can be a very good buy. It can also be the wrong mattress for your body, and no banner fixes that. So before you look at anything else, check three things.
First, the trial and return policy. Find out how many nights you get at home, whether there is a pickup fee, and whether promotional models can still be returned. Second, how you sleep. Side sleepers usually want something softer that lets the shoulder and hip sink in. Back sleepers tend to like medium to medium firm. Stomach sleepers need firmer support so the hips do not dip. Third, height. A queen is sixty by eighty inches, but a fourteen inch mattress may need deep pocket sheets and can make a low bed frame feel tall.
The first grid is memory foam. Foam hugs you and keeps a partner's movement on their side of the bed. Casper's Element is simple and light, and their Original adds more support. Sealy's Cool 12 inch is medium, Beautyrest's ComforPedic Loft uses gel memory foam, and Slumber Solutions offers a firm gel foam for stomach sleepers. Egohome, Alwyn Home and Novilla round it out with gel and cooling foams.

When a hybrid makes more sense
Foam has one well known downside: it can sleep warm, and it can feel a little like quicksand when you try to roll over. Brands add gel and cooling layers to help, and they do, but if you run hot or you change positions all night, look at a hybrid.
A hybrid puts a layer of pocketed coils under the foam. The coils let air move through, add some bounce and make the edge of the bed feel firmer when you sit on it to put your socks on. They are heavier and usually taller, which matters if you are carrying one up three flights of stairs.
Casper's Original Hybrid is the version of their foam mattress with coils underneath, a good middle ground. Zinus's 10 inch plush cooling gel hybrid is the softest here and one of the lower profiles, easy on a platform bed. Alwyn Home has two, a 14 inch soft medium and the Noren with a quilted top that feels a little more like a classic bed. Ebern Designs' pocket spring hybrid and Sweetnight's 14 inch hybrid are both medium, the setting most couples can agree on. Madevos's 12 inch arrives in a box and sits medium firm, and Rebrilliant's 14 inch pocket spring rounds out the group for anyone who wants a tall, substantial bed. Casper's Dream and Snow hybrids add more comfort layers and cooling, and the Max versions are taller still.
Whatever arrives in a box needs time. Unroll it, let it breathe and give it a day or two to fully expand before you judge it. The first night on a new mattress is rarely the real verdict, and most bodies need a couple of weeks to adjust.

Protect it from night one
The part everyone skips is the part that keeps a mattress nice. A protector goes on the first night, before anything else. Spills, sweat and the occasional cup of coffee in bed happen, and many mattress warranties do not cover stains at all.
Casper has two protectors here, a waterproof one and a breathable one if you run warm, plus a topper if the mattress turns out a touch too firm. Parachute's cotton protector is soft and quiet, their down alternative mattress pad adds a plush layer, and their down topper is the most indulgent thing on this list. Kassatex makes protectors in simple, clean cotton, and Annie Selke's Cloud mattress pad does exactly what the name says.
A topper can also rescue a mattress that is nearly right. If your new bed feels too firm after the adjustment period, a soft topper is an easier fix than a return. It will not fix a mattress that is too soft, though. Sagging only gets worse.
A few habits help any mattress last. Rotate it head to foot every few months, especially in the first year. Keep it on a frame with solid support, because slats spaced too far apart can void a warranty and wear the mattress unevenly. And wash the protector and pad regularly, the same way you wash your sheets.
What I would skip: any mattress you cannot return, no matter how good the offer looks. A bed you hate is a very long, very uncomfortable lesson.

Choosing for the way you sleep
I think most people buy mattresses backward. They start with the banner and end with how they sleep, when it should be the other way around.
The simplest rule is to buy for your sleep position and the return policy, not for the countdown at the top of the page. Side sleepers go softer, stomach sleepers go firmer, and hot sleepers look at hybrids. Put a protector on it the first night. Then give it two weeks before you decide, because your back needs time to get to know it. A new bed almost always feels strange at first, even the right one. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together The Skirt Shapes Worth Knowing Before You Buy.
