Who Owns Birrot: The Two Founders Behind the Label

Birrot is owned and run by its two founders, Kyeongmin Kim and Seyoung Hong, who started the Copenhagen label in 2018. Both are from Seoul and trained in London, and they make the clothes in Korea. Here is how the brand works and what to start with.

Two cities, one wardrobe

Kim and Hong trained at London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins, then relocated to Copenhagen because the pace of the city matched how they wanted to work. Production stayed in Korea, in a small workshop the pair visit twice a year.

Birrot, Answered

Two founders, still in charge. Birrot was founded in 2018 by Kyeongmin Kim and Seyoung Hong, who go by Min and Sey. Birrot's own about page calls them founders and joint creative directors, and Vogue Scandinavia quotes Sey Hong as co-founder and creative director. Neither their site nor the press coverage names an outside investor or a parent company.

Copenhagen base, Seoul roots. Both designers grew up in Seoul, studied in London at London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins, then moved to Copenhagen. The studio and shop sit in central Copenhagen. The name comes from a Korean word that means to draw a process to its conclusion.

Made in Korea. Fashion Forum reported in 2022 that the clothes are produced in Korea from locally sourced materials in a small workshop. Ssense describes the label the same way, as based in Copenhagen and made in Seoul.

Shirting as the base layer

The brand describes what it makes as a uniform, and the tops are where that idea is clearest. They are cut to be repeated, layered and worn into the ground rather than photographed once.

Skirts with Korean precision

Where Copenhagen brands tend toward looseness, BIRROT holds a line. The skirts are cleanly drafted and quietly technical, which is the Korean half of the equation showing itself.

Knitwear for the in-between months

Copenhagen weather is famously unromantic, and the knits are built for it. This is the least performative part of the collection and probably the most used.

Jackets that do the work of a coat

The outerwear is scaled for cycling, commuting and moving between work and dinner without a costume change, which is the lifestyle the founders explicitly designed for.

Trousers, finished properly

Small collections, made well, in a workshop the designers know by name. That is the brand's entire production philosophy and the bottoms are where you can feel it.

Two founders, one point of view

Copenhagen Fashion Week produces a lot of noise and not much longevity. BIRROT has been at this since 2018 with the same two people making the decisions, and it shows.
