Why Lip Tint Beat Lipstick, Plus the Twelve I Keep Reapplying

Why Lip Tint Beat Lipstick, Plus the Twelve I Keep Reapplying

Lip tint took over because it does the one thing lipstick never could: look like your own lips, only flushed, after a coffee and a sandwich. The category now runs from classic lip-and-cheek stains to water tints and balmy glazes. These are the twelve I rate, grouped by how long you want the color to stay.

I stopped wearing lipstick around the time I stopped wearing foundation, and for the same reason. Both felt like a layer sitting on top of my face rather than part of it. Lip tint was the replacement, and it turned out to be the better product. A good stain sinks in, fades evenly and leaves a flush that looks like you just ate a popsicle, which is exactly the look everyone has been chasing since the no-makeup mood took over. None of this is new. Benefit's Benetint has been around for decades, and tints have been a pillar of Korean beauty for years. What changed is that the rest of the market caught up, and now there are water stains, jelly tints, balms and glazes, and I own more of them than I should. The first grid is the most flexible group: tints from Benefit, Milk Makeup, Ere Perez and Sisley that go on cheeks as well as lips, so one tube does the whole face.

Twelve boxes on a pale grey page, one for each product in this edit, each with its brand and name printed below: Benefit Cosmetics Benetint, Milk Makeup Cooling Water Jelly Tint, Ere Perez Beetroot Cheek & Lip Tint, Sisley Paris Color Cloud, Clarins Water Lip Stain, Violette_FR Lip Nectar, Summer Fridays Flushed Lip Stain, Huda Beauty Lip Contour Lip Stain, Rhode Peptide Lip Tint, French Girl Le Lip Tint, Victoria Beckham Beauty Bitten Lip Tint and Ever Amid Nourishing Rouge Stain.

Stains that survive lunch

If you want color that stays through a meal, you want a proper stain. These go on wet and dry down into the lip, so there is nothing left on the rim of your glass. The Clarins Water Lip Stain is matte and very forgiving, Violette_FR's Lip Nectar has a slightly blurred French finish, and Summer Fridays' Flushed Lip Stain is the easiest one to wear on a random Tuesday. Huda Beauty's Lip Contour stain is the most precise, almost a liner. Apply in thin layers and let each one dry, or the color can pool at the center.

Lip stains that last through lunch

Sheer tints, and what I would skip

The last grid is for people who want the color to look accidental. Rhode's peptide glaze is the glossiest, French Girl's balm stick is the softest, and Victoria Beckham Beauty's Bitten tint gives the flush of, well, a bitten lip. Ever Amid's Nourishing Rouge Stain feels like a lip treatment first and a color second. What I would skip is layering gloss over a fresh stain before it sets. It lifts the pigment and turns it patchy, and you end up with a ring of color around a pale center. Give it a minute, then add shine if you want it.

One tint, all day

Tint won because it asks almost nothing of you. No mirror, no liner, no checking your teeth. Pick the grid that matches how long you want the color to last and keep one in every bag you own. By the afternoon it should look like your lips, just having a good day. That is the whole point, and it is why I have not bought a bullet lipstick in years.
