A good wind shell is the jacket I grab when a coat is too much and a hoodie is not enough. I look for matte nylon that folds into a pocket and a cut that sits over a tee without bulk. The Montbell Wind Blast in black is the simple one, and the green Montbell anorak does the same job with more color.

 

When I want something a little sharper, I go for the Alpha Industries hooded nylon jacket or the Reigning Champ team jacket, which both work over a shirt. Vuori's Sunday Element is what I would wear on a walk, Malbon's navy anorak pulls on over anything, and the Napapijri Rainforest anorak is the pick when the weather turns. Keep the rest of the outfit plain, like gray joggers or dark jeans.
