This edit explores winter formal dresses through velvet, long sleeves, jewel-tone satin, sequins, and the final layers that shape an arrival. I would begin with the fabric and hem, then decide whether color or silhouette gets the room.

Winter Formal Dresses: Ralph Lauren's Red at MoMA
A little color under velvet
In 2022, Ralph Lauren presented his Fall/Winter collection at The Museum of Modern Art in black, white and red. That palette is a useful cue for winter formal dresses: choose one color with presence, then let the rest of the look hold still.
Velvet has more going for it than a seasonal label. The V&A traces plain velvet weaving in Italy to the 13th century and patterned velvet to the 14th, when Lucca's weavers were already making gold-flowered designs in several colors. The Museum at FIT describes velvet as looped and cut pile. A fiber label still matters: the V&A's historical example is silk velvet with metal thread, while FIT documents polyester that can mimic silk chiffon and a rayon and cotton velveteen coat with a polyurethane ink treatment. Similar surface language, different fiber stories.
The dresses in this edit take that surface into formal shapes. AQUA's burgundy strapless gown uses a draped, pleated front against a mermaid line; Theia's Ophelia brings beads to black-and-silver stretch velvet. AQUA's navy one-shoulder gown uses an oversized bow and satin trim, while Chiara Boni's garnet Medey gathers at the side waist before its fluted hem. Ralph Lauren's dark-garnet boat-neck gown makes a quiet echo of that MoMA red.
I would keep the accessories restrained and let the color do the work. Before choosing a floor-length style, check whether the measurement starts at the shoulder or the back of the neck, then compare it to the shoes you plan to wear. One hem can change the whole posture of the evening.

Long sleeves, open necklines
An evening sleeve should work from arrival through dinner, so I check its cuff and shoulder line before I think about jewelry. The Museum at FIT notes that polyester can be processed to take on different appearances, and that one polyester example mimics silk chiffon. I would not infer a fiber from sheen alone. Tadashi Shoji's embroidered black-and-beige gown is listed as 100 percent polyester; Eliza J's velvet column sets sheer raglan sleeves against a faux-pearl mock neckline.
Betsy & Adam's off-the-shoulder gown balances the long sheer sleeve with a ruched waist; Xscape's black scuba-crepe gown brings a V-neck and side slit under a cascading ruffle. The navy Xscape shifts to a satin spread collar and flared cuffs, while Betsy & Adam's forest sheath closes the line with a mock neck and gathered waist. Chiara Boni's dark-midnight Wiesa adds faux pearls at the side and a front slit.
At a fitting, raise both arms and then sit, checking whether the sleeve lining and cuff stay where you want them. I would let a square neckline keep the neck bare and use a longer earring with a mock neck. What I would skip: layering a statement necklace over the pearl detail, especially when a ruffle already sits at the hip.

Emerald, wine, and satin
Color does more work when the silhouette stays calm. British Vogue framed jewel tones as an autumn and winter palette in 2011 to 2012, naming amethyst, sapphire, emerald, ruby, garnet and citrine; its styling note favored a head-to-toe shade or a small accessory accent. I would borrow the focus, not copy a runway formula.
Green satin gives several routes into the idea. Ramy Brook's Tatiana uses a shirred mock neck and an open back; A.L.C.'s Nadia has short tulip sleeves and a gathered waist. Amsale's emerald A-line keeps a high cowl neck over a clean skirt, while RÓHE's silk-satin maxi uses wide sleeves and an ankle-skimming line. The fiber label changes the calculation: RÓHE lists 100 percent silk, while Quince's Catalina is a forest-green stretch satin in polyester and spandex.
Wine red and cobalt give the palette a little friction. Lulus's wine satin maxi gathers at the bodice and has side slits; Emerald Sundae's cobalt gown has adjustable straps, front ruching and a laced back. I would check the closure with arms overhead and do a quiet turn to see how the open back and hem sit. What I would skip: adding a second bright color at the neckline. A black wrap lets the dress stay the headline.

Sequins with some restraint
Sequins are a texture decision before they are a color decision. The V&A's account of late medieval velvet notes gold-flowered designs in Lucca by 1376; velvet and sequins are not the same thing, but both let a surface catch light before the silhouette speaks. I would choose one clear source of shine and build from there.
AQUA's silver-taupe belted gown keeps a short sleeve and round neck around its allover sparkle. SAU LEE's mocha Grace is a gathered column, a warmer alternative to silver. Teri Jon's merlot one-shoulder gown divides its material between a taffeta bodice and sequin skirt, while Mac Duggal's black illusion column plays dense sequins against sheer mesh. Toccin's gunmetal Monica uses small-scale pailette sequins and a criss-cross back; L'AGENCE's dark-port Sayla places overlapping sequins on flexible mesh.
Check the lining at a side seam and look at the hem with the shoes on, especially when sequins continue into a full skirt. I would pair one of these with a plain wrap and save the crystal buckle for a quieter dress. Lulus's black sequin maxi has adjustable straps, a sweetheart neckline and a kick-pleat back slit, which gives the shine a more relaxed finish. What I would skip: a glitter shoe plus a beaded bag plus statement earrings, unless the invitation is clearly asking for a dance-floor entrance.

The coat and shoe question
A coat needs to earn its place between the car and the coat check without swallowing the dress. The Cinq à Sept taupe Gianella stole brings faux fur and pearl drops; Kobi Halperin's black Tami is a short snap-front coat with long sleeves, and FRAME's gray alpaca-wool cape leaves the dress visible under an open wrap.
On the shoe side, Badgley Mischka's Cher uses a pointed toe and crystal buckle on black satin. Sam Edelman's Vienna keeps the profile simple in black leather with a 2.75-inch covered heel. Kurt Geiger's open-beige Zip Court adds rhinestones over a closed toe, while Lulus's black velvet ankle-strap heel pairs a gold buckle with a block heel. Lulus's black faux-suede pump goes in the opposite direction, with twin straps and a stiletto line.
Decide the shoe before you check the hem. Stand, take a turn, then walk a few steps while checking whether the ankle strap sits flat and whether the toe still looks clean beneath the dress. I would use the stole over a sleeveless neckline, the cape over long sleeves and the short coat with a dress that can keep its own shape. If the outer layer will come off at dinner, consider the dress without it too, not only the arrival look. A closed toe gives the final look a winter finish without asking the hem to do all the work.

How I would get dressed
I would choose the dress first by the surface I want in the room: velvet for a soft change in color, satin for a long clean line, sequins when the invitation calls for light. Then I would set the hem against the exact shoe, choose one outer layer and keep jewelry to a single point of shine. The coat check can wait until those decisions are made.
Ralph Lauren's red, black and white at MoMA is the note I would keep in my head. One color with a clear companion, one dress that does not need an explanation, and an entrance that looks as though I meant to make it.
