Winter Scarves

How to choose a scarf in wool or cashmere that is warm, soft and easy to style, plus a few ways to tie it.

A good scarf is the quickest way to make an outfit look thought through, and it is also one of the most practical things you can wear. It keeps the wind off your neck, it adds color or pattern where you want it and it turns a plain coat into something personal. Fabric is the first thing to consider. Wool is warm, durable and comes in plenty of textures, cashmere is softer and lighter, and blends give you a bit of both at a gentler cost in care. Size changes how you can wear it. An oversized blanket style can be draped, wrapped or thrown over a shoulder, while a slim scarf ties neatly under a collar. Pattern is a matter of taste. Plaids and checks feel classic, herringbone and solid tones are the easiest to pair, and a bold print can carry an otherwise simple outfit. Look for a soft hand, tidy edges and fringe that is stitched securely so it does not unravel.

There are a few reliable ways to wear a scarf. Fold it in half, loop it around your neck and pull the ends through for a simple and warm knot. Drape a large one loosely over both shoulders for a cape effect that looks relaxed and modern. Tuck a slim one under a shirt collar, or tie it at the neck of a coat for a polished finish. If your scarf has bold color or pattern, keep the rest of your outfit quiet so it stands out. A neutral one works especially well with a printed coat or a bright knit. In the coldest weather, wrap it twice and tuck the ends inside your jacket. To look after it, shake it out after wearing, brush wool gently and wash cashmere by hand in cool water. Store it folded or rolled, away from direct light, so the color stays rich.

Our honest take

Our view is that scarves are worth choosing carefully because they get so much use. A good one keeps you comfortable and instantly lifts the coat or jacket you wear most. If you only buy one, pick a neutral plaid or a rich solid that goes with your outerwear, then add a bolder pattern if you feel like experimenting. Pay attention to how the fabric feels against your skin, since a scratchy scarf ends up in a drawer. The right one will feel as good as it looks, and you will reach for it every time the temperature drops. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Bold Scarves and Faux-Fur Scarves.
