A good pair of wool trousers does more for a man's outfit than almost anything else in the closet. The drape is what you pay attention to, a clean fall from the pleat down to the shoe with a small break at the ankle. Todd Snyder's Italian flannel and gabardine trousers and J.Crew's worsted wool Crosby are the classic route, and they look right with a crisp shirt and loafers.

 

If you want a more relaxed shape, NN07's Kay pleated wool trouser in deep truffle is the one I keep going back to. Polo Ralph Lauren's flannel-blend Suffield pants in dark grey and Wax London's brushed wool Tyne in navy give you the same softness at a calmer pace. Universal Works adds a brown herringbone with a bit of texture. Wear them with a knit polo in warm weather or a turtleneck once it cools down.
