YEAR OF OURS Leggings and Sports Bras: Where to Start

YEAR OF OURS Leggings and Sports Bras: Where to Start

YEAR OF OURS is the Los Angeles activewear label built around a better fit. I like it because it treats a sweatshirt, a sports bra and a legging as one wardrobe, and this edit is where I would start.

The women behind YEAR OF OURS

I have a soft spot for any activewear label that starts with a complaint, and this one starts with a good one. In 2016, Eleanor Haycock wanted workout clothes that fit and flattered her body and kept coming up short, and she was tired of adjusting herself to the clothes instead of the other way around. She and her longtime colleague Lily Shin started YEAR OF OURS in Los Angeles, and designer Alejandra Hernandez came along after. Their own story keeps fit and a friendly team spirit right at the center.

What I like most is that the idea shows up in how the clothes get made. Most of the line is made at the label's own factory in El Monte, where everything is cut, sewn and printed, and a team of six women with different heights and sizes fit-test the pieces together. Inclusion done in the fitting room is a much better promise than one in a campaign (at least to me).

Hernandez brings a stylist's eye and a love of vintage sportswear, so the clothes have personality on top of the practicality. That is why a team sweatshirt, a ribbed tank and a sculpting legging can sit in one closet without looking like a uniform.

Sport layers with team spirit

The Varsity Sweatshirt and Rugby Sweatshirt are the team references of the label, in burgundy and cream or forest and navy, and they are the pieces I would reach for first. The Stretch Sporty Tank Top is a quiet base layer, and the Studio Open Back Sports Bra is the one that makes the athletic part of the outfit something you show on purpose. I would pair either with a simple dark legging and let the contrast do the talking.

In my fashion dreams she is leaving class in the Varsity Sweatshirt and carrying the same colors through to a coffee stop. What I would skip: ordering a sweatshirt and a supportive bra the same way, since they are meant to sit very differently on the body. Check the fit notes for each, then decide.

Leggings that change the line

This is where the fit conversation turns into shape. The Sport Sprint Legging has the burgundy and cream team palette, the High Sculpt Legging keeps a clean chocolate-brown line, and the Stretch Baby Flare Legging opens at the hem for a very different proportion. The Ribbed Capri Legging is the short one, for days when I want a little more ankle showing.

Picture her walking to a morning workout in the Baby Flare with a sweatshirt tied at the waist, then keeping the legging on for errands. My test is to pick the shoes first: a flare likes a sneaker with enough sole to clear the hem, while a capri leaves the ankle and shoe in full view.

One-pieces and the layers around them

The Recycled Cut Out Onesie and the Thermal Ski Onesie make the strongest case for getting dressed in a single move. One has its cutout right there in the name, and the other sounds ready for a cold training morning. The Stretch Shrug is the light layer I would keep close on the walk to the studio, and the Charlie Pullover is its softer, warmer opposite. Sporty Short Short changes the mood completely.

Picture her pulling the Stretch Shrug over a onesie after class, then switching to the Charlie Pullover when the evening cools. I would not match everything. A fitted base, one useful layer and a single sporty detail is plenty.

A fitting-room idea that holds

I keep coming back to YEAR OF OURS because the athletic roots feel real, not borrowed. The team language gives the clothes a point of view, but it is the everyday usefulness that keeps them in rotation. A sports bra, a pullover and a legging can move through a whole day together, on the mat and off it. Although I will admit I would probably wear the sweatshirt far more than I would work out in it.
