A Whole Wardrobe in Shades of Brown

A Whole Wardrobe in Shades of Brown

Brown has quietly replaced black as the color fashion reaches for first. Pantone named Mocha Mousse its color of the year for 2025, and a year on the shade has moved from accent to whole outfit. This edit goes head to toe, from suede jackets and slip dresses to knee boots and bronzer.

Brown outerwear is the new black coat

For a decade the safe coat was black or camel. Now the default has darkened a few shades into espresso, tobacco and chocolate, and it reads warmer and more deliberate without trying. Suede jackets, leather bombers, a feather cape and a couple of faux fur coats do most of the work here.

The brown dress, minus the earnestness

Brown used to signal practicality, the color of school uniforms and sensible boots. The dresses here make a case for it after dark: a slip dress, long-sleeve jersey, leopard and a backless dress from Alaïa. In brown, a cut that would look severe in black just looks warm.

More dresses, from knit to lace

The second rack leans softer. Knit dresses from Cult Gaia, A.L.C. and Srg, a satin and lace maxi, and an evening blazer dress for anyone who wants tailoring without the separates. The common thread is texture, which is what keeps head-to-toe brown from going flat.

Knits in the color of strong coffee

A brown sweater is the easiest way into this whole idea, because nobody notices it is a trend. Here is a shrunken cashmere crew, a turtleneck, a puff-sleeve cardigan and a sleeveless mock neck to wear under the jackets above.

Tops that do the heavy lifting

Bodysuits make up a surprising share of this edit, and that tells you how brown is being worn: tucked, smooth and tonal, so the eye reads one long line. Add a corduroy shirt, a fringe plaid shirt, a lace bodysuit from Valentino and a suede ruched top, and you have most of a fall wardrobe in one color.

Skirts with a 1970s accent

The brown skirt is a 1970s idea, and this fall's revival leans into it: minis, a pencil, a wrap maxi and a couple of skorts. Suede and leather turn up again and again, next to plaid, silk and lace. Wear one with a sweater in a slightly different brown and let the mismatch show.

Trousers in every brown fabric

Brown trousers come in suiting wool, satin, suede, leather and corduroy here, plus a few leggings and leather shorts for the brave. A boyfriend jean and a corduroy jean keep it casual. Corduroy in particular is having a second life, the fabric of a professor's blazer reworked as something you would wear on purpose.

Boots first, then everything else

Shoes are where brown has always been allowed, so the interesting part is how far it goes now. Khaite's knee-high boots sit beside slingback pumps, mules, a Chloé clog and a shearling-lined slipper from The Row. Brown leather at the foot softens an outfit in a way black never manages.

The brown bag, still the safest bet

The brown bag never left, which is why it is the least surprising part of the edit and the most useful. Slouchy hobos, a shearling Miu Miu, Saint Laurent shopping totes and The Row's Parker cover every size. If you only add one brown thing this season, this is the one that works with what you already own.

Earrings to finish it

Brown loves warm metals and big shapes. This is mostly earrings, from small hoops to oversized drops and knots, plus a bangle and a necklace for anyone who wants more.

Belts, sunglasses and a scarf or two

Accessories are how brown gets into an outfit that is otherwise black or navy. Sunglasses from Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta and Alaïa, a run of Khaite belts, scarves and a cashmere hat make the case without much commitment.

Brown makeup, and one woody scent

The color reached faces before it reached closets. Bronzers, brown eyeshadow and a lip liner carry the 90s makeup revival that keeps resurfacing online, and Byredo's Bois Obscur is the woody note to go with it.

A few more things

The rest of the edit refuses to sort neatly: a cashmere sweater, a suede jacket, a jumpsuit, Saint Laurent's Babylone mules, Bottega Veneta sunglasses and a vanilla perfume from Phlur. Think of it as the drawer where good things end up.

Why brown is sticking around

Trends built on a single color usually burn out in a season. Brown might not, because it does not ask you to change anything except the shade: same coat, same boots, same slip dress, only warmer. That is a quieter kind of trend, and probably a longer one.
