Apple Picking and Pumpkin Patch Outfits for Fall

An orchard day is cold in the morning, muddy by noon and sweet by the end. Here is what I would wear for apple picking, from sweater to boots.

Orchard days have a very specific dress code. You need to be warm in the morning, ready for mud by lunch, and good enough in photos to justify the whole outing.

I start with the sweater, and I like it soft and a little oversized. The Brandon Maxwell Joanna Fair Isle in light grey is the one that looks like fall, the Lisa Yang Mable cashmere sweater in green is the color I would wear in an apple tree, and the House of Dagmar knit in grey is the calm one. The Carolina Herrera double jersey wool sweater in black has a sculpted shape for a more dressed-up outing.

Relaxed Jeans

Jeans for the orchard should be roomy enough to climb a ladder in. A straight leg with a little weight hides the mud best.

The TWP New Straight in blue and the RÙADH Agnes in a light wash are the easy ones, and the Still Here Life jeans are the clean mid-rise pair. The Moussy Vintage Albany has a lower rise for a more relaxed fit.

Boots for Muddy Fields

This is the one place I choose boots that are built for mud. A chunky sole will get you through a field and back to the car.

The Prada Monolith combat boot in a pale shade has a lug sole and a small pouch, and the Bottega Veneta Lug lace-up in black is the sturdy one. The Moncler Gaia snow boot in pink and the Moncler Insolux teddy boot in tan are the cozy picks for a cold, wet morning.

Barn and Utility Jackets

A utility jacket is the layer for an orchard day. It has pockets for your phone, your keys and the apple you just picked.

The RÙADH Ghillie jacket in a medium wash is the denim one, and the Harris Tapper Orwell cord jacket in brown is the sturdy one. The Leset Kyoto windbreaker is the light layer for a breezy afternoon, and the Khaite Alder belted suede jacket is the one to wear when the day is dry.

Dress for the Mud and the Photos

A soft sweater, a relaxed jean, a boot with some sole and a jacket with pockets. Dress for the field, and the camera roll will take care of itself.
