Bag charms for purse turn a handle into a point of view, from crystal bows and hearts to initials and woven shapes. I would choose one by its clip, scale, and what the bag can carry.

Bag charms for purse: A Small Detail With a Long Memory
Small pieces, long memory
At the V&A, a chatelaine probably made in Birmingham at Matthew Boulton's Soho Manufactory is dated around 1785; it hung from a belt with split rings for seals, scissors and keys. It was a useful system, not decoration in search of a job. I like that distinction. A modern charm can be pretty, but the best still have a reason to be there.
Bag charms for purse are less a new idea than a new place to put a personal accessory. In the eighteenth century, chatelaines were called equipages and worn at the waist; Matthew Boulton made polished-steel examples. The modern version trades belt for handle, tools for keys, color, or a tiny portrait.
For a pearl-and-crystal mood, the Coach Bow Bag Charm brings a light-purple crystal bow on a silver-tone clip; the Minnie Mouse keychain adds a faux-pearl and glitter-heart swing. Coach's blue resin Heart Bag Charm has pearly beads and a red crystal detail, while Rebecca Minkoff's Evil Eye Faux Pearl Swag pairs a beaded chain with crystal-centered eyes. I would keep the shapes small against a neat top handle and let one bright detail do the talking.
If you want a tiny character, the Hello Kitty pavé figure is the loudest choice; the Juicy Couture heart lock adds a pearl drop, and Nina's red pompom softens the crystal heart beside it. Before clipping anything on, compare the clip with the bag's hardware and check the width and drop against the handle. A shiny accent should not pull a slim strap out of shape.

Hearts with room to swing
In 2013, Vogue described Fendi's Buggies as fur keychains on purses, and the writer swapped hers between bags. That interchangeability is my test for bag charms for purse: I want to move one between handles without rethinking the whole bag. I would decide whether the heart is sweet, graphic, or useful before settling on color.
The Roxanne Assoulin Happy Heart has three cotton-candy enamel hearts on an eight-and-a-half-inch gold-tone chain, while the Chelsea28 version hangs one red heart below a matching clip. Solar Eclipse's cream acetate Los Angeles heart turns into a keychain, so it has an obvious job off the bag too. Chloé's Alphabet Logo Heart keeps things simple; the Marc Jacobs stitched leather Heart Mirror has a long cord for tying on rather than just clipping.
For a softer outline, the cream Kate Spade Love Notes tag pairs its repeated message with a heart-shaped clip. I would wear it against a plain canvas tote or a compact red bag, but not both at once. Check whether the chain length lets the heart swing clear of the bag's corners, and whether the clip opens wide enough for the handle. What I would skip: a long chain on a thin strap that already twists under a small load.

Letters with a little weight
An initial can be a signature, but it does not have to be your own. Vogue dates Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami's color-pop collaboration to spring/summer 2003, then notes the artist's cartoon work and manga characters on accessories. That is the fun of a bag detail: it can point to a whole little world, not just a monogram.
The hand-crocheted U comes with glass beads and an antique-silver dog clip; the BaubleBar blue A uses a seven-inch cord loop, which gives the letter a more relaxed, sporty read. Coach's polished silver C is a compact plate with a carabiner, while the BP gold B is puffed and clipped to a lobster clasp. For a bit of sparkle, petit moments' crystal-studded gold I makes the initial hard to miss.
Chloé's Alphabet Lock brings a gold-tone letter to the group, while Chelsea28's White Gold resin S is quieter. I would choose the letter for contrast first: red against cream, silver on black, or blue cord against a warm brown tote. Look at the charm from arm's length and turn the clasp once; a tiny initial that faces backward or slides around the handle will quickly lose its point.

Shapes for the everyday tote
Coach's T-Rex mascot debuted in 2015 in Stuart Vevers' first ready-to-wear collection, a reminder that a small emblem can become a character. On a tote, I would give it room. A woven shape or soft figure sits well against canvas without competing with a print.
Indego Africa's Ayn Evil Eye uses black-and-natural raffia; its blue Mini Fan shares the woven texture in a lighter outline. GANNI's shrimp-pink flower hangs from a red loop, while the leopard bow chain mixes gold-tone links and textile. The expandable BEIS duffle charm opens into a zip compartment; MAISON de SABRÉ's watermelon is leather and fits an AirTag.
For a character-led accent, the white MCM bulldog has a long black strap and Visetos canvas, while the Polo Ralph Lauren suede bear brings a western hat and fringe. I would pair one soft or woven object with a plain tote, then check how its dog clip, snap ring, or D-ring sits on the handle. Compare hardware color with the bag's, and make sure the charm will not drag a thin strap. What I would skip: a long figure on a small purse where every step makes it the main event.

Choose the attachment first
I would choose the attachment before the charm. On a small structured purse, I would look at a compact bow, resin heart, or silver C; on a roomy tote, I would consider a raffia fan or the expandable duffle, provided the strap can take the swing. Then I would check clasp type, hardware finish, and scale against the bag, and decide whether I want a key ring or just an accent. A chatelaine once kept the day's small tools close at the waist. My version can be lighter, but I still want it to earn its place on the handle.
