Black cherry nail polish sits between deep red, burgundy and near-black, and it has come back every autumn since the vampy 1990s. Here are the wines, oxbloods and press-ons that get the color right.
Black Cherry Nail Polish: Dark Cherry Shades for Fall

Red Enough to Be Black
The ancestor of black cherry nail polish is Chanel's Rouge Noir, sold in the US as Vamp, which showed up on the autumn/winter 1994 runway. Who mixed it depends on whom you ask. Hello magazine credits makeup artist Heidi Morawetz, working with Karl Lagerfeld, and says it was cherry red with a drop of black. Other accounts add Dominique Moncourtois. Pulp Fiction is said to have made it famous and sold it out worldwide, but Chanel never confirmed that Uma Thurman wore it, so I treat that part as legend.
The name black cherry itself went viral in fall 2023, when Glamour called it the sleekest fall mani trend. In fall 2024 Vogue noted Kylie Jenner wearing it, done by Zola Ganzorigt. It returns every autumn now, and this year outlets are pairing it with short nails.
The shade is a very dark red, somewhere between burgundy and plum, usually worn glossy in a solid coat. It looks almost black in low light and turns red-plum in the sun. Picture a wine glass, wet cherries, velvet, satin ribbon, a smear of paint and a hand in a dark glossy shade. The first grid is polishes. The second is press-ons.
Here is a test I like: take the bottle to a window before you buy it, or check the swatch in daylight. A good black cherry should look nearly black inside and clearly red outside.

Dark Cherry Nail Polish: Wines, Oxbloods and Browns
These eight polishes run from wine reds and a near-black oxblood to one coppery brown, from Olive & June, Chillhouse, Kure Bazaar, JINsoon and Hermès. Chillhouse says its Forever Wear is a gel-like polish that needs no UV lamp, and Kure Bazaar's Les Rouges is a full-coverage formula.
For wear, follow manicurist Ornellas, quoted by Parade: wipe nails with alcohol or acetone, use a base coat, which also prevents staining, then two coats of color and a top coat. Woman and Home says two to three coats gives the best color.
What I would skip: a matte top coat over a sheer jelly like Garnet Glass. Dark reds look their best glossy.

Burgundy, Wine and Deep Red Press-Ons
If you like the color but not the drying time, this grid is the answer. ohora has two burgundies. NP Allure Burgundy is a deep, wine-like red. N Classic Burgundy is described as a perfectly ripe cherry on your fingertips, full coverage, meant for any season. ohora also says its newer sizing runs about 1.06mm larger on average.
Dashing Diva has two in different moods. Merlot is a long matte burgundy coffin, the drama pick. Ruby Radiance is a medium almond in a high-gloss deep red with shimmery magnetic effects. Olive & June's Cabernet press-on is the same dark plummy wine red as the polish, in a medium oval, and its Cherry Mocha Polka Dots is a rich red-brown with a subtle dot print in a short round shape. Cherry mocha took off on TikTok in fall 2024, after DND's burgundy-brown shade blew up.
Chillhouse's Rogue Rouge is a Chill Tips kit with 30 nails, a dual-sided buffer and file, a cuticle stick and gentle glue. Nail Reformation's kit is a salon-quality press-on set with a non-toxic, odor-free formula that can be reshaped and reused. Going by the product photo, it is burgundy with red French accents.
Here is a pairing I like: short round nails in the dark red, with a bare face and a black knit. Julie Kandalec told Parade that a deep black cherry looks great on short nails in fall.
What I would skip: the long matte coffin, unless you want a statement. Short and glossy is the easier way to wear this color.

Pick Your Darkest Red
I think black cherry is the one fall shade worth owning in every form, because it works on a short bare nail and on a long dramatic one. It reads as a classic red in daylight and something moodier after dark.
My rule of thumb is to choose by the hour. Wine and burgundy in daylight, the oxblood ones for evening. Use the press-ons for a week of travel and the polish when you have an evening at home.
