Blush Pink for Every Texture, Powder to Tint

Blush Pink for Every Texture, Powder to Tint

Blush pink is the shade that looks like you, only a little more awake. These are the powders, creams and liquid tints I would reach for, with notes on undertone and how to keep a pink flush soft.

In 2016 Pantone named Rose Quartz one of its two colors of the year, the first time it had ever picked a pair, and described it as a warm, embracing rose. Ever since, a gentle, dusty pink has felt less like a trend and more like a neutral. Blush pink is the makeup version of that idea: a color close enough to your own that it reads as health, not as makeup.

Powder is the easiest place to start, because a brush lets you control every stroke. ILIA Soft Focus Blurring Blush in Closer is a baby pink that is talc free and made to blur pores. Givenchy Prisme Libre Loose Powder Blush in Mousseline Lilas is a cool light pink with lilac in it, and each compact holds four colors meant to be mixed together. Gucci Luminous Matte Powder Blush in True Pink comes in a pastel pink compact with a star on it. NARS Talc-Free Powder Blush in Catch Me is a matte cool pink that lasts up to 16 hours. Haus Labs Color Fuse in Dragon Fruit Daze has fermented arnica to visibly reduce redness, which suits a pink on reactive skin. ciele flush & PROTECT in Chill is a cool pink with SPF 45+ built in, and the Too Faced Cloud Crush Blurring Blush in Candy Clouds is the sweetest name on the shelf. Glossier Cloud Paint Plush Blush in Bloom is a cool baby pink that starts pillowy and finishes like powder.

A quick test: swipe your pink on the inside of your wrist, not the back of your hand. If it looks a bit like your own pulse, it will look like a flush on your cheek.

Soft pink creams that melt in

Creams are where blush pink gets its glow, because they sit into skin instead of on top of it. Glossier Cloud Paint in Puff is a light pink gel cream you apply with a fingertip. MAKEUP BY MARIO Soft Pop Blush Veil in Pinch Me Pink is a pale pink with hyaluronic acid and a radiant finish. Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Powder Pink is a light pink in a flip top compact with a mirror, and it works on lips too. Its sibling, Pot Rouge Velvet Matte in Peony, is a cool soft pink with a blue edge and a matte, cream-to-powder finish. Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in Bliss is a matte nude pink, and one dot per cheek is plenty. KJH.brand Soft Smudge in Soft Pink is a lively pink multistick for cheeks and lips. LAWLESS Pinch My Cheeks in Duchess is a soft blushing rose with a satin powder finish, and Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Flushed in the poppy cool pink shade is a soft matte balm powder for cheeks and lips.

How to wear it: press cream on with your fingertips and work up toward the temple, then leave it alone. Pat, do not swipe.

What I would skip: layering a pale cream over a heavily powdered base. Pale pinks show every dry patch, so keep the skin underneath a little soft.

Liquid pinks, from baby to bright

Liquids give blush pink its cleanest edge, and the shade range here goes from baby pink to bright. YSL Make Me Blush in Hibiscus Heat is a cool baby pink that is creamy going on and dries like powder, with up to 12 hours of wear. Armani Beauty Cheek Tint in Bold Pink is the same baby pink family in a lightweight liquid, while Cosmic Pink is the brighter cool pink for when you want the color to show. ciele blush & PROTECT in January is a mineral SPF 50+ liquid blush in a cool pink. Wonderskin Wonder Blading in Whimsy is a lilac pink stain made to be fade proof and transfer proof. Danessa Myricks Colorfix in Bunny is a soft pink pastel and a waterproof pigment for eyes, cheeks and lips. MAC Powder Kiss Liquid Mousse in Buffiest is a midtone nudey pink with a hazy matte finish, and the Blush & Go liquid blush in On Point is a dusty rose matte with a cushion applicator.

Pairing tip: use one dot of a bright pink, like Cosmic Pink, and tap a pale one, like Bunny, over the edges to soften it.

What I would skip: a stain on skin you have just exfoliated. Liquid tints grab dry flakes, so wait a day.

Choosing your pink

Pick your blush pink by undertone first and depth second. A cool baby pink like Hibiscus Heat or Bold Pink flatters fair to medium skin with pink in it, while a dusty rose like On Point or Duchess warms up neutral and deeper skin. Texture is next: powder for oily days, cream for dry ones, liquid when you want the color to stay put. Put the color on the apples of your cheeks and pull it up toward your temples, and keep the lips and eyes quiet. If a pink ever looks too sweet, do not throw it out. Tap it thin with a finger and let the skin do the rest.
