Brown sneakers covers suede, leather, retro runners, low-profile pairs and platforms in every shade from espresso to cognac. I keep thinking about how a shoe made for snowy pitches became the color everyone wants in October.
Brown Sneakers: From Icy Football Pitches to Mocha Mousse

Why brown sneakers got interesting
The Adidas Samba started in 1950 as a football boot for icy and snowy pitches. It came out of the Herzogenaurach company Adi Dassler founded in 1949, and nothing about that says fashion. A shoe built for slush now goes with a gray coat and a scarf.
Brown sneakers have had a similar glow-up. Pantone named Mocha Mousse its 2025 Color of the Year, announced on a Thursday in December 2024, and it was the first time the institute picked a brown. Leatrice Eiseman said the shade moves browns from humble and grounded toward aspirational. Vogue says a hue once written off as drab became a regular in closets, and traces part of the rise to Miuccia Prada, whose cinnamon suede 530 for Miu Miu and New Balance pushed the look into It-sneaker territory in 2024. Brown is not a quiet neutral anymore. It is a decision.
Suede is where I would begin, because it is the softest way into the color. In my head she is walking to the office in October in the Ralph Lauren Dani in chestnut, a low court shape with leather trim and the logo at the tongue, under wide dark denim. The Axel Arigato Daze Suede Runner in dark brown is the slim, quiet one, while the Slow Suede Runner in the same brown adds layered panels and a dark gum sole. The Dolce Vita Viper is a retro runner with smooth leather overlays, and the Blondo Carmen in chocolate is waterproof with memory foam, which is the one I would pick for wet sidewalks. For something dressier, the Veronica Beard Natalia in espresso has cream accents, and the Tory Burch Field in cognac keeps its logo tonal.
Tip: run your thumb across the suede in the fitting room. If it leaves a clear, darker mark and springs back, the nap is healthy.

Brown leather sneakers with some backbone
Press a thumb into the toe box of a leather sneaker before you buy it. Good leather creases softly and returns, and a brown leather pair will show every crease, which is exactly why it ages well. This is the grown-up side of the color, and it is easier to dress than suede when the weather turns.
The Samba OG in auburn with warm vanilla beige is the one most people picture first: an extra-low profile, cream detailing and a gum sole. Picture her at a Saturday market in it, with a long camel coat and straight jeans. The Axel Arigato Daze Flat Runner in dark brown with a light gum sole is handmade in Portugal and stays pleasantly minimal. The Taos Delta in hazelnut is built around a supportive footbed with high-rebound cushioning, so I would think of it for long days on your feet.
Then the less obvious ones. The Converse Chuck 70 in woven leather has a glossy cupsole and a streamlined shape, and it comes in unisex sizing, so check the size chart twice. The Forever & Always Polette has a round toe, a retro feel, a metallic heel detail and a thin 1.5 cm sole. The Nike Air Force 1 07 in tan and cognac with gold detail is the easy gift to yourself, and the Vince Oasis Runner in honey leather has tonal panels that keep it calm. The Pikolinos Vigo in taupe-brown has a side zip and a lugged sole for when the sidewalk is wet.
What I would skip: a stiff leather with a sharp toe seam if you plan to walk across town on day one.

Brown retro runners in suede and mesh
Vogue notes that suede brown runners carry a nostalgic, 1970s charm, and that reissues of the Adidas SL 72, the Nike Cortez and the Puma Speedcat all arrived in brown. That is a good clue for how to wear them. Think of a track jacket, a pleated skirt and thick socks, not a sleek trouser.
The Nike Moon Shoe OG in baroque brown is the most seventies of the set, with nylon, suede and a waffle-style outsole. The Zoom Vomero 5 in cacao is the chunky one, with mesh, a cream swoosh and reflective accents. In our fashion dreams she is cutting through a park in the Vomero 5 with bare ankles and a long skirt, and nobody thinks twice. The New Balance 574 in black coffee has light blue laces and a gum sole, and the 204L in cortado has sculpted overlays and a chunkier sole.
The adidas Tokyo is a dark brown leather trainer with cream 3-Stripes, a retro low-top runner with a gum sole. The Veja Cateyes is dark brown suede with a cream V and light blue laces, with a lugged track-inspired sole. The rag & bone Retro Runner in toffee suede is made with recycled materials and has a raw-edge foam tongue and a serrated tread. The Vince Santa Monica in cacao has cream side stripes and a gum-tipped sole.
Test: bend the shoe at the ball of the foot. A runner with mesh panels should flex easily without the suede overlays buckling.
What I would skip: the chunkiest runner if most of your wardrobe is slim and tailored. Pick the 574 or the Tokyo instead, which sit lower.
Low-profile browns with terrace roots
The Gazelle landed in 1966 in two colorways, inspired by running shoes of the early sixties. It later became a status symbol for the British terrace casuals of the 1980s, and Adidas consultant Gary Aspden put it simply: it was the shoe everyone wanted. The Gallagher brothers wore it too, a grail pair for Britpop.
The Gazelle Lo Pro in coffee with off-white stripes and a gum sole is the skate-leaning version, in suede. The Samba OG in aurora coffee, with pink and white details, is the sweeter take on the same idea. The Puma Speedcat OG in brown suede has a cream formstrip and a slim black sole. The lifestyle Speedcat dates to 1999 and is based on fireproof racing shoes worn by Grand Prix drivers, and Who What Wear reports over 28 million pairs sold globally by 2010. Picture her in October with black tights, a short pleated skirt and a cropped leather jacket.
The Veja Panenka is a brown suede court shoe with a cream V, a silver heel and a gum sole. The Golden Goose Super-Star in cognac is hand-distressed and made in Italy, so each pair looks worn in on day one. The Nike Tennis Classic is tonal chocolate nubuck. The ASICS Skyhand OG in reddish brown has cream stripes, and the COS Minimal in dark brown brushed suede is the plain one.
Buying test: look at the sole edge. A slim sole should be glued evenly, and the stripes or logo should sit straight.
What I would skip: a pre-distressed finish if you like to keep your shoes tidy. The scuffs are the point.
Brown platforms and high-tops for colder days
Over time suede becomes shiny, and its nap flattens, smoothens and darkens. So with the platforms and high-tops here, I would dull the nap with a crepe suede brush or a suede rubber first, then protect.
A platform gives brown a different mood. The Reiss Francesca is chocolate suede on a chunky white platform, and the Veronica Beard Truett in chestnut has embroidered chain-link stitching on a cream flatform sole. The ara Mikky is a cognac leather lace-up with a metallic heel on a cream platform. The Coach Soho in sable has genuine shearling trim at the collar and an embossed C, which makes it the most winter of the group. In my head she is crossing a train platform in it in November with a long knit skirt and ribbed socks.
High-tops are the other route. The JSlides Tall Sneaker is dark brown suede with double straps and a hidden wedge. The Gabor High Top is tan-brown suede with a side zip on a creeper sole, so you can slide it on without lacing. The Puma Speedcat Wedge lifts the racing silhouette on a hidden heel, and the Paul Green Faye in moro suede is a dark lace-up on a chunky sole.
Test: walk up and down a stair. A platform should roll with your foot, and a hidden wedge should not tip your heel sideways.
What I would skip: a thick shearling collar with skinny trousers. It needs a skirt or a wide leg to look balanced.
How I would pick a brown pair
I would begin with the material. Suede for dry, soft days and anything with a waterproof treatment for the rest, and leather if you want one pair that gets better with age. Then I would choose the shade: espresso and chocolate sit easily with black, while cognac and honey belong with denim and camel.
After that, think about the shape. Low profiles like the Samba and Gazelle work with almost everything, runners are for skirts and track pants, and a platform is the one to wear when you want height without heels. Brush and protect the suede on day one.
Samba started life on an icy pitch, so a little slush should not scare you. Pick the brown you will actually wear on Tuesday. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Gola Sneakers and Suede Sneakers Beyond The Basic White.
