Building a Bedtime Shelf Around CeraVe Night Cream

Building a Bedtime Shelf Around CeraVe Night Cream

I built a bedtime shelf around the CeraVe night cream and asked what the brands around it are really doing overnight. It starts with a barrier cream and adds retinol serums, pharmacy classics and a few softer beauty-label creams.

Most night creams promise something dramatic by morning. CeraVe's idea was duller and, I think, smarter: start with the barrier. The brand began in 2005, when a group of dermatologists identified a need for therapeutic skincare that restores the skin barrier, and it launched with a Moisturizing Cream, a Moisturizing Lotion and a Hydrating Facial Cleanser. It started life as part of Valeant Pharmaceuticals, its cream was built for the exam room, and L'Oréal acquired the brand in 2017. CeraVe describes its formulas as combining three ceramides, numbered 1, 3 and 6-II, with MVE technology, a patented system that releases ingredients slowly. The CeraVe night cream adds biomimetic peptides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, and the brand describes it as designed to soften and renew the look of tired skin overnight. It is a peptide night cream rather than a retinoid, which is the quiet point of it. This edit builds a bedtime shelf around it, with three more from CeraVe first, then night creams from other houses, some with retinol and some very deliberately without.

Twelve boxes on a pale gray page, one for each product in this edit, each with its brand and name printed below: CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream, CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion, CeraVe Skin Renewing Retinol Serum, CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum, Cetaphil Healthy Renew Night Cream, Cetaphil Rich Hydrating Night Cream, Olay Regenerist Retinol24 Night Moisturizer, Good Molecules Gentle Retinol Cream, Youth to the People Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Night Cream, Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Radiance Renewal Night Cream, Elemis Superfood Overnight Prebiotic Cream and Biossance Ectoin Overnight Rescue Night Moisturizer.

Pharmacy creams and their origins

Pharmacy shelves have their own origin stories. Cetaphil was invented in 1947 by a pioneering pharmacist in Texas, and Galderma, which owns it, says the original cleanser still uses the same formula. Healthy Renew is the brand's peptide answer to retinol, which Cetaphil describes as a gentler option that needs no typical adaptation time. Rich Hydrating is simpler, a fragrance-free cream with hyaluronic acid. Olay began in 1952 in Durban, South Africa, when chemist Graham Wulff created Oil of Olay, a name spun from lanolin, and Procter & Gamble took the company on in 1985. Retinol24 pairs Pro-Retinol with a collagen peptide, so ease in slowly. Good Molecules comes from the people behind Beautylish and launched in 2019, and its Gentle Retinol Cream tells you to wear SPF every day. The American Academy of Dermatology says retinoids should not be used during pregnancy, so anyone pregnant or trying to be should ask a doctor before using any of them. My tip for a retinol night cream is two nights a week at first, with a plain barrier cream on the nights in between.

Four more for after dark

One new cream at a time

The beauty-label creams are where texture gets playful. Youth to the People was founded in Los Angeles in 2015 by cousins Greg Gonzalez and Joe Cloyes, inspired by their grandmother Eva, who started a professional skincare line decades earlier. Its Superberry Dream night cream doubles as a mask, with vitamin C in the THD ascorbate form, squalane and hyaluronic acid. Fresh began in 1991 in Boston with Lev Glazman, Alina Roytberg and a soap they wrapped by hand, and Lotus Youth Preserve is built on Super Lotus, star fruit leaf extract and vitamin E. Elemis was founded in London in 1989 by Linda Steiner with Noella Gabriel, Sean Harrington and Oriele Frank, and its Superfood collection arrived in 2016 with prebiotics, while the overnight cream uses camu camu, cocoa butter and banana flower extract. Biossance makes its squalane from fermented sugarcane, and the Ectoin cream adds ectoin, magnesium and peptides. What I would skip is smoothing the thickest of these over a retinol serum during your first nights with the serum, because the combination is hard to read if your skin gets cranky. Add one new thing at a time, and bring the cream in once the serum feels routine.

Bedtime, in order

My bedtime order is boring on purpose. Cleanse, use a serum if you have one, then finish with a cream that keeps the barrier comfortable, and wear sunscreen the next morning no matter what. The two CeraVe retinol serums are directed for the evening, building up to daily use so your skin can adjust. Everything else in this edit is here for the nights you skip the serum. A good night cream is mostly about giving your skin nothing to complain about. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together CeraVe Moisturizer for Oily Skin and CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser.
