Burberry Cologne, Built Around a Trio of Cedars

Burberry Cologne, Built Around a Trio of Cedars

Burberry cologne started as a quiet idea about weatherproof cloth and grew into the Hero family, a woody line anchored by three kinds of cedar. Here is how the house got there, and how to pick between its five strengths, its Mr. Burberry cousin and the small sizes.

Thomas Burberry founded his house in Basingstoke in 1856, and in 1879 he introduced gabardine, a cloth made to shrug off English weather. The trench coat that grew out of it during the First World War is what most people picture when they hear the name. I keep that in mind whenever I smell Burberry cologne, because the best of it still has the feeling of a cold, clear day outdoors. Hero, launched in 2021 with Aurélien Guichard as the perfumer, is the clearest example. It is a cedarwood scent first, and not just one kind: Fragrantica lists Atlas, Virginian and Himalayan cedar in the base, and Burberry itself calls the trio of cedarwood oils the signature of the whole collection. Around that sit bergamot, juniper and black pepper in the lightest version, then incense, pine, vanilla and leather as the strengths climb. The four bottles below are the core of that family, from the airy Eau de Toilette to the dense Elixir. Think of them as one idea at four volumes, and pick by how loud you want to be in a room.

Twelve boxes on a pale grey page, one for each product in this edit, each with its brand and name printed below: Burberry Hero Eau de Parfum with Pine & Cedarwood, Burberry Hero Eau de Toilette with Bergamot and Cedarwood, Burberry Hero Parfum with Cedarwood, Burberry Hero Elixir de Parfum with Vanilla, Leather, and Cedarwood, Burberry Hero Parfum Intense with Cedarwood and Leather Accord, Burberry Mr. Burberry Eau de Parfum with Patchouli and Vetiver, Burberry Hero Eau de Toilette Duo Gift Set, Burberry Hero Deodorant Stick, Burberry Hero Eau de Toilette Travel Spray with Bergamot and Cedarwood, Burberry Hero Eau de Parfum Travel Spray with Pine & Cedarwood, Burberry Mini Hero Duo Cologne Sampler Gift Set and Burberry Hero Eau de Toilette and Deodorant 3-Piece Gift Set.

Beyond the flagship bottle

The next four widen the frame. Hero Parfum Intense keeps the cedar and adds a leather accord underneath, which makes it the most dressed-up of the family without turning sweet. Mr. Burberry Eau de Parfum is a different mood altogether: tarragon and cinnamon on top, then patchouli, amber and smoky vetiver, so it reads earthier and warmer than any Hero. If Hero is a walk in a park, Mr. Burberry is the pub afterward. The duo set gives you a full bottle and a travel spray of the Eau de Toilette, which is the sensible way to keep one at home and one in a bag. The deodorant stick carries the pine needle, benzoin and cedar notes, so it layers with the spray rather than fighting it. A practical tip: spray Hero on the chest, not the wrists, and let the deodorant do the underlying work. What I would skip is rubbing your wrists together after spraying, because it flattens the bergamot in the first minute.

Sample first, commit later

Smaller formats are where this house is easy to like. The travel sprays, one Eau de Toilette and one Eau de Parfum, hold the same cedarwood story in a size that fits a jacket pocket. The Mini Hero duo pairs the Eau de Toilette and the Eau de Parfum in miniature, which lets you wear one on each arm for a day and compare without committing to a bottle. The three-piece set adds the Eau de Toilette and deodorant to a set built around the idea of British parks in spring. My rule with any woody fragrance for men is to wear it through a full afternoon before deciding, since cedar changes hour by hour. The Eau de Toilette leans juniper and pepper early, while the Eau de Parfum turns resinous with benzoin and pine. What I would skip is judging any of them on the paper strip in a store, because cedar needs skin and warmth to show what it does.

Where I would start

If you are starting from zero, begin with the Eau de Toilette and live in it for a week. Reach for the Eau de Parfum or Parfum once the evenings get cooler, and keep the Elixir for nights when you want people to lean in. Burberry began by solving a weather problem, and Hero still feels like a scent that solves one: it is clean, it is dry and it does not fuss. Pick the strength, spray twice, and get on with your day.

Leather, Cedar and Gift Sets Beside Hero

Hero is a woody scent, and the nicest way to understand it is to see which woody and leather bottles share its dry character. For cedar, the Emporio Armani Acqua di Giò with bergamot and cedarwood and the Jo Malone London Hinoki & Cedarwood are the clear matches. For leather, I would try the Ferragamo Sublime Leather, the Tom Ford Ombré Leather Parfum and the Memo Paris French Leather. The Hermès H24 Herbes Vives and Terre d'Hermès Eau Givrée give you a different side of the house. If you are buying for someone else, the Dior Sauvage gift set and the Creed Leather Wallet gift set are easy to wrap. Smell a leather one and Hero on the same day to see how they differ. What I would skip: the Viktor&Rolf Spicebomb Dark Leather for a warm afternoon. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Coach Cologne Starts With Suede and a Manhattan Loft and Versace Cologne.
