business & pleasure co. Beach Gear: Where to Start

Business & Pleasure Co. is the Australian label that began with a beach umbrella and grew into chairs, coolers and poolside textiles. I like its seaside nostalgia best when the setting feels lived in, not matched.

A beach umbrella, then a whole afternoon

I like a brand story that starts with one simple object. Business & Pleasure Co. was started in the summer of 2017 by two Australian friends with an affection for vintage seaside life, and the first idea was a beach umbrella. It has since widened into outdoor furniture, textiles and accessories. The company's About page calls its point of view Outdoor Nostalgia, which I read as a fondness for old poolside rituals made useful on a modern patio. I went deeper on a related idea in BEACH RIOT Swimwear & Tops: Where to Start.

The founders are Ollie Edwards and Lachlan Leckie, and the design side is still founder-led. That matters to me, because the pieces feel like they came from people who actually like a long afternoon outside.

I read this edit as a loose plan for a day outdoors rather than a matching furniture set. I start with shade and a place to sit, then decide whether a Beach Towel, a cooler or a game belongs in the car. I want each piece to earn its space, not just echo the palette. If you want to keep going, LSPACE Swimwear and Beach Bags: Where to Start is the one I would read next.

Shade first, then the extras

The Patio Umbrella and the Holiday Beach Umbrella are two different kinds of shade, and I would measure the space before choosing either. The Clamshell Base is the support piece, so I would match it to the umbrella instead of treating it like decoration. For sitting, The Tommy Chair is a compact landing place, the Directors Chair Table Height is a taller perch, and the Modular Pillow Stack adds a softer lounge layer.

The Beach Towel and the Beach Blanket cover solo and shared lounging. For refreshments I would choose between the Hemingway Cooler and the Premium Cooler Bag by how much I plan to bring. The Placemat Set of 4 belongs at a proper table, and the Bocce Ball Set only earns its room if there is open ground to play.

Buy for the way you linger

I would not buy all of this at once. I would first measure the patio or beach spot, match an umbrella with its base, and choose one seat or soft piece for the way I actually use the place. The Beach Towel is easy for a solo swim, and the Beach Blanket gives friends room to spread out.

If I am carrying food and drinks, I would compare the Hemingway Cooler with the Premium Cooler Bag first. What I would skip is the Bocce Ball Set unless there is open ground. The range works best when each piece has a job, not when every stripe matches.
