Butter Yellow and Baby Blue Outfits to Try This Fall

Butter Yellow and Baby Blue Outfits to Try This Fall

Butter yellow and baby blue are soft, sunny colors that look surprisingly grown-up together once the weather cools. These four looks pair a butter wool sweater with sky blue jeans, a baby blue shirt with a butter satin skirt, and a butter tweed jacket over a pale blue silk set. Start with one piece of each and add more as you go.

When Claude Monet moved to Giverny in 1883, he made the house as colorful as the garden. The dining room is painted in two shades of yellow, and the kitchen next door is covered in blue Rouen tiles. Walking from one room to the other is the best case I know for wearing these two colors together.

Butter yellow and baby blue are both pale, but they are not sweet when you treat them like neutrals. The yellow is warm and creamy, the blue is cool and clear, and side by side they look calm rather than cute. For fall, keep them in wool, satin, denim and tweed.

A quick test: put on a pale blue shirt with something butter yellow, even just a scarf. If the yellow looks creamy and the blue looks fresh, these colors suit you.

Mood board for butter yellow and baby blue outfits: four street-style photos of women wearing butter yellow and baby blue, close-ups of the &Daughter wool sweater, the Aflalo midi skirt, the Cult Gaia Florence clutch, the Proenza Schouler maxi dress and the Blazé Milano tweed jacket from this edit, and two still lifes in both colors

Start With One Piece of Each

The easy way in is a single accessory in each color. Cult Gaia's Florence clutch is a pastel yellow sculpted shape that looks like a small vase, and Manolo Blahnik's Hangisli 70 slingbacks are yellow satin with the crystal buckle. For blue, Valentino Garavani's plissé satin belt is a wide light blue band, and Bottega Veneta's Dustbag mini pouch is pale blue Intrecciato leather with a drawstring. Pick one of each and wear them with white and denim.

A Butter Sweater, Baby Blue Jeans

&Daughter's Innes sweater is a butter yellow wool V-neck, soft and a little slouchy. Gabriela Hearst's Amoret wide-leg jeans are a pale sky blue with a curved leg, which makes this the most relaxed outfit here. Maryam Nassir Zadeh's ballet wedges in light blue suede match the jeans, and Lizzie Fortunato's Tile earrings are gold squares set with a small stone.

How to wear it: tuck the front of the sweater into the jeans so the curve of the leg shows from the hip down.

A Baby Blue Shirt, a Butter Skirt

Still Here's Madison shirt is a light blue cotton poplin with a tall collar, crisp enough for the office. Aflalo's Rixa wrap midi skirt is listed as cream but looks butter in satin, and it catches the light. Khaite's Marlene pumps are pale yellow leather with a pointed toe and a low heel, and Chloé's silk scarf is blue with a white lace edge that you can knot at the neck or tie to your bag.

The Butter Dress, a Denim Jacket

Proenza Schouler's Sirena maxi dress is one-shoulder yellow crepe gathered at the side, the kind of dress that feels like summer. Balenciaga's cropped denim jacket in a light wash has an oversized collar, and it makes the dress work for an October afternoon. Paris Texas' Lidia 105 slingbacks are a shiny mirrored blue, and Jia Jia's citrine necklace is a strand of small yellow stones.

What I would skip: a yellow shoe. The blue slingbacks link the jacket to the floor and stop the dress from looking like a bridesmaid.

A Butter Tweed Jacket Over Baby Blue

Blazé Milano's Gliss jacket is a butter yellow cotton tweed with gold buttons, and it does all the work. Under it, Wardrobe.NYC's draped jersey top is baby blue with a cowl neck, and Jamie Haller's Arc tapered silk pants are a soft sky blue with pleats. Blue top and blue trousers make one pale column, so the jacket stands out. Magda Butrym's Devana mini bag is a cream knit with a big flower on the side.

Wear the Pastels Like Neutrals

Butter yellow and baby blue are easier together than either one alone. Choose a yellow with some cream in it rather than lemon, and a blue that looks like a clear sky rather than a baby blanket. Let one color take most of the outfit, and keep the fabrics heavy enough for fall. If you only try one look, start with the butter sweater and blue jeans. For a single piece rather than a full look, I went through butter yellow dresses and why they work like white without the laundry worry.
