Butter Yellow and Chocolate Brown Outfits to Try This Fall

Butter Yellow and Chocolate Brown Outfits to Try This Fall

Butter yellow and chocolate brown take the color everyone wore last summer and make it work for fall. These four looks pair a butter bouclé sweater with brown jeans, a brown poplin shirt with a butter tweed skirt, and a butter cardigan under a brown velvet shirt. Start with one piece of each and build up.

In February 2025, Vogue named butter yellow one of the top color trends for summer, pointing to suede at Chloé, separates at Chanel and draped dresses at Toteme. A month later, British Vogue called it the color of spring. If you bought something butter yellow last year, this is how to keep wearing it.

The answer is chocolate brown. Butter yellow on its own looks like July. Next to deep brown, it looks like October: warm, soft and a little rich, like custard and dark chocolate. Brown gives the yellow somewhere to sit.

A quick test: put a butter yellow top on with brown boots or a brown bag. If the yellow looks creamy rather than bright, you have the right shade, and every look below will work.

Mood board for butter yellow and chocolate brown outfits: four street-style photos of women wearing butter yellow and chocolate brown, close-ups of the Isabel Marant bouclé sweater, the Alessandra Rich midi skirt, the Demellier suede tote, the Nili Lotan suede jacket and the &Daughter cotton-blend cardigan from this edit, and two still lifes in both colors

Start With One Piece of Each

Start with one knit and one boot. Le Kasha's Chypre sweater is a short-sleeved butter yellow cashmere, and Valentino Garavani's Enigme 105 pumps are yellow satin with a pointed toe. For brown, JW Anderson's Loafer knee boots are brown nubuck with a small hardware detail at the top, and Arch4's Nancy scarf is a dark brown ribbed cashmere. A yellow sweater with brown boots and jeans is the whole idea.

A Butter Bouclé Sweater, Brown Jeans

Isabel Marant's Ponara sweater is a fuzzy butter yellow bouclé, the most touchable thing here. SLVRLAKE's Phoenix straight-leg jeans are dark brown denim, and Jennifer Chamandi's Thierry knee-high boots are chocolate suede. Staud's Reef bag is a round cream shape covered in small beads, which picks up the lightness of the sweater.

How to wear it: let the sweater sit loose at the hip and tuck the jeans into the boots for a long brown line.

A Brown Shirt, a Butter Skirt

Comme Si's cotton-poplin shirt is a deep brown with an open collar, and Alessandra Rich's tweed midi skirt is a butter yellow weave with a straight shape. A brown shirt and a pale skirt make a sharp contrast. Manolo Blahnik's Hangisi 50 pumps are yellow satin with the crystal buckle, and Demellier's Hudson tote is chocolate suede with a gold clasp.

The Butter Dress, a Brown Suede Jacket

Alaïa's one-shoulder midi dress is pale yellow stretch jersey with a cutout at the waist. Nili Lotan's Cirque suede jacket in dark brown is roomy with front pockets, and it makes the dress feel easy. Aeyde's Mia Cap 55 ankle boots are chocolate suede on a wedge, and Jil Sander's Vision mini tote is cream leather.

What I would skip: yellow shoes. With a yellow dress, brown boots ground the outfit and match the jacket.

A Butter Cardigan Under Brown Velvet

Brunello Cucinelli's velvet shirt is a dark brown with pockets on the chest, worn open like a jacket. Under it, &Daughter's Enya cardigan is a pastel yellow knit buttoned up as a top, and Lemaire's high-waist wide-leg jeans are dark brown. Brown on brown with a flash of butter at the front is the easiest formula here. Jimmy Choo's Mave knee boots are chocolate suede.

Make Summer Last

Butter yellow does not have to go away when summer ends. Choose a yellow that looks like butter rather than lemon, and a brown that looks like dark chocolate rather than tan. Let brown do most of the work, especially in suede, velvet and denim, and use butter as the bright spot. Start with a butter sweater and brown jeans.
