BYOMA Moisturizing Gel Cream: The Barrier Line And What To Layer With It

BYOMA Moisturizing Gel Cream is a light, ceramide-based moisturizer from a Glasgow brand built around a boosted barrier. Here is how I would use it with the rest of the line, plus the other gel creams, barrier serums and gentle cleansers that sit well around it.

Why the BYOMA barrier idea works

In 1769, in France, François Poulletier de la Salle isolated a pale, waxy solid from human gallstones. He never published it, and it was Michel Eugène Chevreul who named the substance cholesterine in 1815, from the Greek words for bile and solid. So one of the lipids that keeps skin supple was first met as a gallstone. Barrier skincare has odd beginnings.

BYOMA is the modern version of that curiosity, with a founder who got tired of a different excess. Marc Elrick says he started developing the brand in 2020, during the first lockdown, when people were playing chemist in their bathrooms with super-strength actives, and he concluded that better skin comes from a boosted barrier. It launched in 2022 from his Glasgow incubator, Future Beauty Labs, simultaneously in the US and the UK, and in September 2025 Bansk Group agreed to buy a majority stake with Elrick staying on. The BYOMA Moisturizing Gel Cream is the centre of it, a gel-cream the brand builds around a Tri-Ceramide Complex with ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids, plus niacinamide and green tea. The brand also calls it oil-free, fragrance-free and National Eczema Association approved.

The trick is to see the line as a short routine, not a shelf. Creamy Jelly Cleanser is the wash, Hydrating Milky Toner comes next, then the Hydrating Serum, then Gel Cream Moisturizer, which the brand says to use one or two pumps of on cleansed skin after serum. Moisturising Rich Cream is the version for colder months, Barrier+ Treatment is the targeted step, and Barrier+ Eye Cream and Balancing Face Mist round out the small extras.

Gel creams and water creams from other brands

Weather changes how a gel cream feels more than any label does. It is light in July and thin in January, so the honest test is whether the formula still holds up when the heating comes on.

Clinique Moisture Surge 100H Auto-Replenishing Hydrator is the obvious neighbour, a gel-cream in the same weight class as BYOMA's. belif The True Cream Aqua Bomb has hyaluronic acid and niacinamide in its name, which makes it a close cousin. Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream comes in a refillable jar, Charlotte Tilbury Magic Water Cream adds niacinamide, and Biossance Probiotic Gel is the lightweight non-comedogenic option.

Benefit The POREfessional Smooth Sip is for skin that cares about pores, Summer Fridays Cloud Dew is the soft, cooling one for a warm week, and point of view. chill it plumping water moisturizer is the playful, bouncy one at the end of the row.

A pairing I like: a gel cream in the morning under sunscreen, and a richer cream on top only at night when skin is dry.

What I would skip: a gel cream as your only moisturizer on a cold, windy commute. Keep the richer cream for those days.

Barrier serums to layer under a gel cream

Thinnest first, richest last is how a barrier serum finds its place. It goes on before the gel cream, and gets about a minute on damp skin to settle in.

ALPYN 3-in-1 Barrier Repair Serum is the efficient one for a short routine. Youth To The People Superfood Skin Drip Smooth + Glow Barrier Serum brings the brand's green-food look to the step, and Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin 10/10 Barrier Boost puts hyaluronic acid and ectoin together. The INKEY List Ectoin Hydro-Barrier Serum and Experiment Super Saturated Hydrating Barrier Serum are the plain, simple ones, and Peter Thomas Roth Collagen Skinjection is for people who want a plumping feel. Tata Harper Bio-Barrier Serum and Skinfix barrier+ Triple Lipid Activating Serum are the most serious in the row, and I would pick one of those when skin is properly stressed, after a sunburn or a week of too many acids, not on an ordinary Tuesday.

I put a barrier serum on at night, then the gel cream on top. Skin gets the water first and the seal second. On the mornings you only have time for two steps, keep the serum and the gel cream and let everything else wait.

What I would skip: three barrier serums at once. The idea is fewer, calmer steps.

Gentle cleansers that leave skin comfortable

Ten minutes after washing, your face will tell you whether the cleanser suits it. If your skin feels tight, the cleanser is too strong for you, and no moisturizer will fully make up for that.

Youth To The People Supershroom Calm Cleanser and Kiehl's Ultra Facial Gentle Face Cleanser with Glycerin are the two I would start with. Farmacy Green Clean is a creamy cleanser, banu Chamomile Jelly is a hydrating jelly, and Dezi Skin Canvas is a gentle gel. Augustinus Bader The Cream Cleansing Gel is the skincare-lab option, Origins Checks and Balances is the frothy one, and Dehiya Alia Beldi is the one I would pick if you like a cleanser with a story behind the name.

Jelly or cream cleanser in the evening, then a barrier serum and the gel cream. Three quiet steps and you are done. Rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry rather than rub, and do the serum while skin is still slightly damp. That tiny habit does more than another product.

What I would skip: a foaming cleanser on the same night you use an exfoliating acid. Let the barrier have a night off.

BYOMA Gel Cream, judged over a winter

The BYOMA Moisturizing Gel Cream deserves a winter of testing, not a week. Use it one or two pumps a day, add nothing new for two weeks, and watch how skin behaves when the air turns dry. I would rather see a moisturizer hold up in February than impress me in April.

If it holds, keep it. If it does not, add the Rich Cream on top at night, and go back to the gentle cleanser before you buy anything else. Keep the routine short and let the barrier do its work. A gallstone gave us cholesterol. A lockdown gave us a gel cream.

For skin that breaks out as well as feeling tight, my guide to an acne safe moisturizer covers the lighter gels too.
