Camilla Swimwear

Camilla Swimwear

Camilla was founded in 2004 by Camilla Franks at Bondi Beach in Australia, after she began by selling hand-printed kaftans at Sydney markets. The prints are hand-drawn and painted by in-house artists, and the pieces are cut, sewn and embellished by hand. This edit gathers crystal-embellished linen and silk dresses, printed silk tops, palazzo pants, kimonos, one-piece swimsuits and a sun hat.

A collage of vivid printed kaftans, silk dresses, resort styling, and colorful street looks.

Printed dresses and the fashion opera

Camilla Franks had no formal fashion or business training when she started selling hand-printed kaftans at Sydney markets. In 2004 she founded the label at Bondi Beach and launched it at Australian Fashion Week with a fashion opera runway show, which tells you most of what you need to know about the house. Everything since has been loud on purpose. The prints are hand-drawn and painted by in-house artists, and the pieces are cut, sewn and embellished by hand. Twice a year Franks travels the world for inspiration, then returns to Sydney to design limited-edition collections with that team. The dresses here show it. The Sisi Society crystal-embellished printed linen mini and the Porcelain Parlour tie-detail silk maxi are the full maximalist version, while the Matadora Flora V-neck tie-front midi and the I Left My Heart in Granada ballerina midi keep the shape simple and let the print do the talking. For less pattern, the V Neck Full Length Bias Slip Dress and the Silk Maxi Slipdress are the quiet entries, and the linen shirt dresses are the easy daytime route. For a wedding invitation with a garden in it, my garden formal wedding guest dress notes pair well with the florals.

Tops with a story

Camilla began with kaftans, so it makes sense that the tops feel like small pieces of the same idea. The Taurus Rising Silk Shirt and the Azul Adventured tie-front puff-sleeve top carry the printed storytelling in a smaller dose, and the crystal-embellished printed silk-satin top is the one that turns jeans into an evening outfit. The embellished lace-up silk blouse and the plain Silk Blouse sit at the calmer end. Because each collection is limited edition, the prints here are the ones to look at closely, and my silk tops for evening can help you style them, since the artists draw and paint them by hand. A simple test for a printed top: if the pattern is busy, keep everything below it to one solid color pulled from the print. The Floral Ruffled Bikini Top and the Cotton Halter Cropped Top are made for warm weather, and the graphic-print belted shirt can be worn open over either one. What I would skip is wearing the embellished silk-satin top under a heavy knit, since the crystals are meant to be seen.

Pants and skirts that match the mood

The bottoms follow the same rule as the dresses: pick one loud piece and let it lead. The Embellished embroidered printed silk-satin pants and the Floral-print belted palazzo pants are the statement choices, and the Scarf Belt Wide-Leg Trousers and Printed wide-leg pants make it easy to dress them up or down. The Balearic Bebé Silk Lounge Pants and a second pair of silk lounge pants are what I picture for a long dinner on a terrace. For skirts, the Corset Waist Linen-Silk Maxi Skirt gives some structure, and the Embellished Printed Maxi Skirt brings the crystal work down to the hem. Franks has built the brand on resort wear, so the logic is a long, easy line with one point of detail. For an occasion, cocktail dress shapes shows how a slinky silhouette can sit next to a printed one without a fight.

Kimonos, swimsuits and a sun hat

Camilla is famous for brightly printed silk kaftans, and this group is where the resort side of the brand lives. The Crystal-embellished kimono and the De Nada Grenada Silk Chiffon Shrug are the layers I would pack first, and the Embellished printed silk cover-up and the Long Sarong With Tie Waist And Frill Edge turn a swimsuit into lunch. The Call of Catalonia Scoop-Neck One-Piece Swimsuit and the Ole Ole One-Piece Swimsuit are the clean shapes, while the crystal-embellished paisley-print bikini is the dramatic one. The Porcelain Printed Sun Hat finishes the story, and the Scarf floral-print silk-scarf clutch bag is a small way to bring the print along. For a closer look at what to wear over a swimsuit, I wrote about cover-ups that do more work. The collections are sold in 55 countries, but the idea is still a Bondi one.

How I would wear Camilla

I would build around one printed silk piece and keep everything else quiet. A Silk Maxi Slipdress with the crystal kimono over it, or the palazzo pants with the plain Silk Blouse, is how I picture it. Franks started at a market stall and now runs a B Corp certified house, and the clothes still feel like they were made by someone who loves color. If you are packing for a holiday, my notes on a vacation dress are a good place to keep going.
