Chanel Slouchy Hobo Bag: The Chanel 25 in Caviar, Denim, Tweed

Chanel Slouchy Hobo Bag: The Chanel 25 in Caviar, Denim, Tweed

The Chanel slouchy hobo bag is the Chanel 25, which arrived with the Spring 2025 show. I go through it in caviar, denim, tweed and suede, with the slouchier Chanel 22 beside it.

The Chanel 25 is named after the year it launched, and it first walked out on the Spring 2025 runway at the Grand Palais on October 1, 2024. That show came after Virginie Viard left the house in June 2024, and it was the work of the Chanel creative studio, which took the Grand Palais itself as its starting point. So the Chanel 25 is a bag with an interesting backstory: designed in a moment of change, and still very sure of itself.

Chanel describes it as a bag with two signature pockets and a supple, hobo-inspired silhouette. British Vogue calls it a slouchy shoulder bag directly inspired by the 2.55, in lightweight quilted leather with a chain strap, and I think that is the best short description. It keeps the quilting and the chain, but drops the stiff, structured posture. It reinterprets the house codes through quilted leather, a leather-interlaced chain and the double C.

Everything you see here is pre-owned, which I love for a bag this recent. Each listing is one single piece, so if one catches your eye, it is the only one of that exact bag.

Start with the caviar. Caviar is calfskin embossed with a pebbled finish, and it resists scratches and scuffs better than smooth leathers, so it suits a bag you plan to throw over your shoulder on the way out the door. The small in brown with gold hardware is the odd one out in a sea of black, and I would reach for it with a camel coat and straight jeans. The small in black is the easiest one to live with. Then there are the minis in black, two with aged gold hardware and one with gold hardware, which sit neatly under the arm with a slip dress or a white tee and trousers.

The mediums in black are the ones for people who carry a lot. There are three: one with aged gold hardware, one with gold hardware and one more in plain black. The fitting test is simple: put on your bulkiest jacket, drop the chain on your shoulder and see whether the two pockets still fall where your hand wants them.

Beyond the Caviar

Caviar is where most people start, but the Chanel 25 does not stop there. This grid is the same slouchy shape in other materials, and it is where the bag gets a little more playful.

Denim is the big story here. There is a medium in blue with gold hardware, a medium in black with gold hardware, and a run of minis: blue with gold tone hardware, black with aged gold hardware, and a second blue mini with aged gold hardware. The small in blue rounds out the group. A quilted denim bag sounds like a joke until you wear it with a white shirt and a pair of pale jeans, and then it just looks relaxed and a bit clever. I would wear the black denim mini with a gray knit and a long skirt.

The tweed mini in black with gold hardware is the one that nods most clearly to the house. Tweed and a chain strap are a classic pairing, and on this soft little shape it feels less formal than you would expect. Wear it with a slouchy trouser and flat shoes.

The two shiny crumpled calfskin mediums in black are the most dramatic of the lot. One has aged silver and aged gold hardware together, the other aged gold hardware only. The crumpled finish catches light in a way the matte caviar never does, so they work well at night, over a black dress or a trench.

Then come the shapes that are not hobos at all. The 25 backpack in suede, medium, black with aged gold hardware, is the one to try with a long wool coat. The 25 clutch with chain, in velvet effect nylon and shiny crumpled calfskin, comes in a mini and a small, both in black with gold tone hardware. Think of them as the evening answer to the hobo: small enough for a party, with a chain you can wear crossbody or doubled on the shoulder.

The Chanel 22 Slouch

Before there was a Chanel 25, there was the Chanel 22, and you can see the family resemblance straight away. It debuted at the Spring-Summer 2022 ready-to-wear show under Virginie Viard, and it is named after Chanel's second fragrance, N°22. It is described as a soft, boxy bag with a signature interwoven chain strap, supple leather and embossed CHANEL lettering, made in Mini, Small, Regular and Large.

The difference is in the posture. The 22 is boxier and the 25 is more of a slump, and the 22 is the one I would choose if you like a bag that holds a bit more of its own shape. It is also where the color story gets louder.

The black mini in calfskin with silver hardware is the most familiar. The small in yellow calfskin with aged gold hardware is the one that makes a gray coat look interesting, and the small in green with aged silver hardware does the same for a camel one. The large in white with aged silver hardware is a summer bag, for linen trousers and a striped shirt. The small caviar in pink with gold tone hardware is the sweetest of the group, and it looks best against a plain denim jacket. The medium in blue denim with aged silver hardware pairs nicely with a white tee. The ombre leather medium in neutral with aged gold hardware has a soft, sunlit look, and the calfskin mini in black with a pearl chain is the dressiest of them, one for a slip dress.

What I would skip: pairing a bright 22 with a lot of other bright things. These bags already have a lot to say, so keep the rest of the outfit quiet. Also skip carrying the pale ones with a pile of dark, rough fabrics that might rub on the leather, because lighter colors show every mark. The caviar versions are the sturdier choice if you want something less fussy.

How I Would Choose

So how do you choose among all of these. I start with the shape. If you want a bag that slouches, take the 25. If you want a little more structure, the 22 is your answer. Then I think about the finish. Caviar is the practical one, since it resists scratches and scuffs better than smooth leathers, and Chanel lambskin is more prone to marks than sturdier leathers like caviar.

Then try it on in front of a mirror. Check the chain length against your coat, and see where the bag sits against your hip. Pick the size you can actually picture on a Tuesday, not just at a party.

Chanel's story keeps moving too. Matthieu Blazy was named artistic director in December 2024, and his first show as creative director came in October 2025, so the house has a new chapter ahead. A pre-owned Chanel 25 is a little piece of the chapter before it. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Chanel 25 Mini and Slouchy Denim Now.
