Chimi Sunglasses: Square, Rectangular and Cat Eye Shapes

Chimi Sunglasses: Square, Rectangular and Cat Eye Shapes

Chimi sunglasses appear here as the Seito rectangular frame in 48mm, one of the shapes doing the work this fall. I go through the square and rectangular frames and the cat eyes, and say which suits which face.

Square and rectangular sunglasses

Square and rectangular frames are the sharpest option. The Bottega Veneta square acetate and Tom Ford's Cyrus keep the corners hard, while Chimi's Seito and the Miu Miu rectangular tortoiseshell go narrower and flatter. Gucci's Bamboo rectangular frame is the one with visible metal.

Two tortoiseshell squares

The Tom Ford Cyrus is the heavier frame and sits wide on the face. The Miu Miu rectangle is narrower top to bottom, which suits a smaller face better.

Acetate and metal rectangles

The Bottega Veneta square is all acetate and reads soft at the edges. The Gucci Bamboo brings a gold tone frame, so it catches light rather than absorbing it.

Square frames with sharper corners

The Barton Perreira Crescendo keeps proportions close to a vintage frame. The Jacques Marie Mage Vito is chunkier and the most assertive square in this grid.

Cat eye sunglasses

Cat eye is the shape that never fully left. Dior's DiorGlow and the Bottega Veneta Curvy keep the lift subtle, while JW Anderson's Butterfly and the Jacques Marie Mage Krasner exaggerate it. Cartier's Panthere Classic and the Loewe Anagram put hardware at the temple.

Soft and sharp cat eyes

The Dior DiorGlow lifts gently at the outer corner. The Oliver Peoples Lerrue has a more pronounced point, which is the version that changes your face shape.

Curved and vintage cat eyes

The Bottega Veneta Curvy rounds the whole frame, so the cat eye is implied rather than stated. The Barton Perreira Bessie is the classic mid century line.

Statement cat eyes

The Jacques Marie Mage Krasner is the boldest acetate here. The Cartier Panthere mixes acetate with gold tone metal and is the dressier of the two.

Round and oval sunglasses

Round and oval are the softest. Celine's Circle and Tom Ford's Icon are proper circles, Loewe's oval frame and Lie Studio's Lee stretch that horizontally, and the Jacques Marie Mage Gia goes oversized. Dior's DiorCannage in gold tone is the lightest on the face.

Two ways to do an oval

The Loewe oval is plain acetate and easy to wear daily. The Dior DiorCannage puts the house quilting into a gold tone frame, which is a lot more visible.

Round frames in tortoiseshell and colour

The Barton Perreira Beckford Sun is the restrained round, close to a reading frame in scale. The Gucci Bamboopop is larger and brighter.

Oversized rounds and ovals

The Tom Ford Icon is the round frame that covers the most face. The Jacques Marie Mage Gia stretches the same idea into an oversized oval.

Our honest take

If you take one thing away, it is that the frame should contrast with your face rather than echo it. A round frame on a round face doubles the shape and a square one on a strong jaw does the same. Go the other way and the glasses do something for you. Acetate holds colour and sits heavier, metal is lighter and shows fingerprints, and both of those matter more day to day than the shape does. Check the bridge before anything else, since a frame that slides is a frame that stays in the drawer. The square group is the most versatile of the three and the round group the most forgiving. Cat eye is the one people either wear constantly or never touch again.
