Clarins Lip Perfector and the Paris Institute Behind It

Clarins Lip Perfector and the Paris Institute Behind It

Clarins Lip Perfector is the peptide-powered plumping gloss the French house launched in 2009. This edit pairs the shimmer glosses with the brand's lip oils, sets and a matte stain.

Clarins began in a room, not a lab. On March 15, 1954, Jacques Courtin-Clarins opened his first institute on rue Tronchet in Paris, with the belief that well-being and beauty were linked. The brand is still family-run, and its plant-oil expertise is the thread that runs through the lip products. Lip Perfector arrived in 2009, and Clarins describes it as a peptide-powered plumping lip gloss with instant 3D shine, a sheer shimmer finish, shea butter and a delicate vanilla scent. It now comes in 16 shades. Then in 2015 the house made what it calls the first lip oil on the market, Lip Comfort Oil, and those two ideas sit side by side in this Clarins Lip Perfector edit. I like that the house treats a lip as skincare first and color second. The first grid gives you four of the shimmer glosses, Rose Shimmer, Toffee Pink Shimmer, Candy Shimmer and Rosewood Shimmer, from a soft cool pink to a rosy nude.

From gloss to oil

The second grid moves from gloss to oil. Apricot Shimmer is a milky peach, the last of the Lip Perfector shades in the edit. The Lip Oil Balm is an oil-infused balm with sweetbriar rose oil, jojoba oil and a peptide, which the brand says gives up to 24 hours of hydration. Cryo-Plumping Lip Oil is the odd one, with menthol and field mint for a cooling, minty feel. The Lip Comfort Hydrating Oil Set gives you three minis of the 2015 original, made with sweetbriar rose, jojoba and hazelnut oils. If you want a hydrating lip oil under a gloss, or a little shine on a bare mouth, this is the grid to shop from. My tip is to try the cooling oil after a long flight or a run, when a fresh feeling is the whole point. Keep the glosses for the days when you want visible shimmer.

Night oil and a kiss-proof stain

The last grid is the set of extras. Honey is the clear Lip Comfort Oil, and Clarins itself suggests using it as a night mask. The Water Lip Stain in Rose Water is a bright pink matte stain with hyaluronic acid complex and organic raspberry water, and the brand says it is kiss-proof with 24-hour wear. Two sets round it out, one a mini lip stain and shine set and the other pairing the cooling lip oil with a Cryo-Flash Mask. What I would skip is putting the matte stain on bare, dry lips. Clarins itself calls the oil a base that prepares lips for makeup, so give a thin coat a minute to sink in, blot, and then draw the stain on. Or flip the order and use the oil as a top coat for shine and a fuller look.

How I would build a Clarins lip

I keep thinking about how a brand that began with facials gave the world both a plumping gloss and a lip oil. The way I would build a Clarins lip is simple. Begin with the stain or a Lip Perfector shade for color, then add a thin coat of oil if the day calls for shine. Keep Honey by the bed, and keep a shimmer gloss in the bag for the walk out the door.
