Clean Reserve Perfume and the Shower Soap Idea Behind It

Clean Reserve Perfume and the Shower Soap Idea Behind It

Clean Reserve perfume grew out of a simple idea, a scent that smells freshly washed, and then went farm to fragrance. This edit runs from the quiet Skin and Warm Cotton to sweet cherry, caramel and papaya, plus three sets for trying them.

Randi Shinder has said she did not wear fragrance when she started Clean, but she did shower. The idea came from things in her own bathroom, shower soap, laundry detergent and baby shampoo, and a perfume that smelled like being freshly washed did not exist yet. So she made one, and Clean launched with a simple, linear fresh scent called The Original. The Reserve collection came later, in 2015, and it is the grown-up half of the brand. Its makers call it farm to fragrance, built from the perfumers' reserve of fine ingredients, with eco-conscious packaging and a promise to give back to the farmers who grow them. The caps are sustainable Spanish wood and the cellophane is corn-based and compostable. That is the background to clean reserve perfume, and the first four bottles are its quietest. Skin is fresh musk, copaiba oil and salted praline with Madagascar vanilla. Warm Cotton is bergamot, benzoin and musk, meant to smell like clean sheets. Rain and Acqua Neroli are the fresh pair, cucumber and vetiver in one, mandarin and neroli in the other, and all three of those are sold as a unisex perfume.

Sweet talk, in fruit

The second grid is where the line gets playful. Whipped Cherry is the obvious gourmand perfume of the group, with wild cherry, pineapple and coconut water up top, almond blossom and mimosa in the middle and pralines with vanilla cream underneath. Caramel Swirl comes here as a travel spray: caramelized coconut, Italian tangerine, mango nectar and white chocolate over sandalwood, and the brand says its mandarin oil is cultivated and gathered by local growers in Brazil. Sparkling Sugar pairs cassis and peach nectar with pink sugar and a natural musk called ambrette, and it reads sweet but not too sweet. Radiant Nectar is the fresher one, pear nectar laid over that same ambrette with soft woods. Because Sparkling Sugar and Radiant Nectar share ambrette, they are the easiest two to layer, so try one spray of each on the inside of the wrist and see whether the pear tempers the sugar.

Sets and a tropical one

Sun-Kissed Papaya is the tropical one, with papaya and coconut cream melting into jasmine, vanilla and soft sandalwood. Its tonka bean is sourced sustainably from Venezuela, and the brand describes the line as cruelty-free, vegan, gluten-free and phthalate-free. The three sets are really three ways to shop by curiosity. The Discovery Gift Set holds eight scents in trial sizes, including Caramel Swirl, Sparkling Sugar, Skin and Warm Cotton. The Gourmand Goodies Layering Set pairs Caramel Swirl, Whipped Cherry and Sparkling Sugar with Skin, which is the clue that Skin is meant to sit under the sweet ones. The Mini Skin duo gives you the scent plus a matching travel spray. What I would skip is stacking three sweet scents at once on the first day, because it turns into one loud cupcake. Put Skin down first, add a single sweeter one on top, and change the pairing tomorrow.

Where I would begin

I like a line that admits you might not know yet. If you want one bottle, start with Skin, the signature of the collection and the one the layering sets are built around. If you want to explore, a trial set will settle the rest in a week. The collection belongs to Clean Beauty Collective, a privately held company that began life as Fusion Brands, and it still carries the idea Shinder started with: a scent that feels like a good shower, only now it comes with a farm behind it.
