Color Wow hair products, from Dream Coat sprays and volumizers to every Root Cover Up shade, plus the shampoos and stylers around them. I started with the founder's own story and picked the bottles I would put on a shelf first.
Color Wow Hair Products: The Gray-Root Powder That Led to Dream Coat

From frizz serum to swimming test
In 2002 Gail Federici and John Frieda sold the John Frieda company to Kao. She had co-founded it, along with Frizz Ease, the line that made frizz a product category, and a five-year noncompete pushed her into music for a while. Hair pulled her back anyway, and in 2013 she launched Color Wow, starting with root cover-up powders. That is the story behind Color Wow hair products, and it begins with a family problem.
Federici has said the first root powder was almost a family solution. Her sister tested it, went swimming, and called in shock because it stayed put. She told one interviewer the Frizz Ease name was chosen to say what it did on the tin, and the brand works the same way: each formula goes after one annoying problem. By June 30, 2025, when L'Oréal announced its agreement to acquire it, it had more than 130 beauty awards.
Frizz is where I would begin, because Dream Coat is the product that made people say the name out loud. The original Dream Coat Supernatural spray comes in the 6.7 oz bottle and the 16.9 oz refill, and the brand describes it as the first waterproofing anti-frizz technology, borrowed from the textile industry. The Extra Strength Dream Coat is the one I would point to for hair that is dry and stubborn, and Dream Coat for Curly Hair covers curls and waves. The blue leave-in mist is lighter, for days when you want softness and no full blow-dry. The two minis fit a gym bag.
My tip for October: humidity does not leave when the heat does, and coats and scarves rub hair into static. Pick your spray by the weather in your own bathroom, and keep a mini by the door. The brand says Dream Coat lasts up to three to four shampoos, so I would not use it every wash.

Volume, texture and hold, bottle by bottle
Volume is the other thing Color Wow has built a reputation on, and L'Oréal's own announcement named the Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer as one of its hero products, alongside Dream Coat. It is a white pump bottle with a silver collar, and it is the one I would put on towel-dried roots before any blow-dry at all.
For texture, Style on Steroids is a silver aerosol can of color-safe texture spray, the kind I would pair with a loose braid or a low bun that needs some grip. Raise the Root is the clear spray with the angled nozzle, made to thicken and lift at the crown. Dream Cocktail is a carb-infused leave-in treatment, and Youth Juice is a slim scalp serum for thinning hair, so if that is your concern, read the label and use it as directed.
Insta-WOW is the dry shampoo, and Texas Hold 'Em is the tall hairspray when you want a style to survive a windy walk to the train. The Bigger, Thicker, Fuller kit is the easy way to try several volumizers together.
Test it on your hand first: spray or pump a little and see whether it leaves a white film or a sticky patch, then repeat on a dry section of hair. What I would skip: layering three volumizers on fine hair in one morning, because the roots will feel stiff before the blow-dry even starts.

Root Cover Up shades from platinum to black
Root Cover Up is where this brand started, and it is the product I would send a friend to if she asks how to get through the weeks between color appointments. The powder comes in a black compact with a mirror and a small brush, so it lives in a purse and not only on a bathroom shelf.
The compacts in this group run from Platinum/Light Blonde and Blonde through Light Brown and Dark Brown to Black. The water-resistant temporary touch-ups add Medium Brown, Dark Blonde and Red. Federici's sister tested the very first version by swimming in it, and she reported that it stayed put and could be shampooed out, so I trust the shade range is built for real life.
Shade matching is the whole game. Hold the compact next to the roots you want to blend, in daylight by a window, and pick the shade that matches your current root, not the one you were three years ago. If you are between two, go to the lighter one and build up, since powder is easier to add than to remove. Tap the brush on the back of your hand before it touches your part, and press it into the hairline in short strokes.
What I would skip: black on hair that is only dark brown, and red on hair that has any trace of orange, because both show at the part. Platinum is lovely, but for the same reason I would swatch it on a white tissue before trusting the color on screen.

Color Security, hydrating and repair treatments
Federici told The Cut that shampoo had gotten way too complicated, and the thing she wanted from a shampoo was simple cleansing without heavy resins or silicones that weigh hair down. That is the logic I see across the washing and conditioning products here, which sit near the end of the research story: the brand began with color and kept going.
Color Security is the shampoo, a sulfate-free, color-safe formula in a white tube-style bottle. There is a conditioner for fine-to-normal hair and another for thick hair, which is a useful detail, since most brands make one and hope. The hydrating shampoo and its glossing conditioner are the pair I would choose when hair is dry and dull, and the blue deep conditioning masque and the Dreaming repair and resurfacing treatment are the deeper options for one wash day a week.
Dream Filter is a pre-shampoo mineral remover in a clear spray bottle, made for hair that has picked up minerals from water. I would use it before the shampoo, not in place of it.
Match the weight of the conditioner to the hair: fine hair with the fine-to-normal bottle, thick hair with the thick one, and cut back on the mask if hair goes flat by day two. What I would skip: a rich mask on freshly colored hair that is already soft, because there is nothing to fix yet and it will only weigh things down.

Stylers, glossing serums and finishing sprays
The finishing step is where I like to be fussy, because a styler that is fine at 8 a.m. can look sticky by noon. These are the bottles I would reach for last, after the wash and the blow-dry are done.
One Minute Transformation is the white tube of anti-frizz styling cream, and I would use it on damp ends for a smooth, easy wash and go. Pop and Lock is a small bottle of high gloss finish, the one for a sleek ponytail or a polished low bun. Extra Mist-ical is a shine spray, and Cult Favorite is the firm and flexible hairspray in the silver can. Speed Dry is a blow dry spray made to help you move through drying faster.
Curls get their own two: Curl Wow Flo-Etry is a lightweight leave-in curl serum in a pump bottle, and Curl Shook is a large bundling spray for mixing and fixing curls. Color Control Foam is the purple toning foam for blonde and gray hair, so it is the one I would keep next to a blonde's shower.
The test is a squeeze on the back of the hand: rub it in, wait a minute, and see whether it still feels slick. For sprays, hold the can at arm's length and mist in a sweeping motion, never at one spot. What I would skip: finishing spray on a day when you are wearing a wool coat and a scarf, since the rubbing will undo it, and a light shine spray will do the job instead.

The order I would build a Color Wow shelf
I would begin with one problem, not twelve products. If frizz is your complaint, that is Dream Coat in the size that suits your shelf. If it is roots, the Root Cover Up in the shade that matches in daylight.
Then add washing: Color Security for colored hair, with the conditioner weight that matches your strands. After that, pick one volumizer or one styler, not both, and keep a mini Dream Coat in the bag for weather.
Federici started this brand because her sister's gray roots needed an answer, and then she spent more than a decade building the rest. I like the discipline of that, and I would shop it the same way: slowly, one real problem at a time.
Once your roots are sorted, I explained which shampoo for gray hair keeps silver bright, and why purple cancels the yellow.
